About the Position Under direction, to perform paraprofessional accounting work critical to the life‑cycle management of County‑wide information technology equipment. The technician receives incoming equipment; processes vendor invoices (vendor management and account tracking); leads the monthly billing process to collect and recognize revenue; and processes equipment for final disposition. Position includes entry level general ledger work, including account monitoring and journal entry preparation.

This position is based on-site at Shasta County offices in Redding, CA and is not eligible for remote work.

Distinguising Characteristics This paraprofessional class is a bridge level involving accounting work performed by an incumbent who has completed two years of accounting education normally required to enter the professional accounting field. It is distinguished from the Accountant Auditor I class by scope and complexity; and from the Senior Account Clerk by the level of responsibility and knowledge required. Positions are found in departments with major accounting systems or in the Auditor‑Controller's Office.

Representative Duties

Compile data and interpret data for budget preparation purposes.

Maintain records in accounting systems on personnel, salaries, inventories, fund appropriations and expenditures, accounts payable/receivable, purchasing, and similar activities.

Assist in devising forms and methods for financial recordkeeping or accounting systems.

Prepare journal entries for fund transfers and other administrative adjustments in budget appropriations.

Compile data for state and federal reimbursements and audits; prepare various statistical and accounting reports.

Supervise and/or assign work to subordinate clerical staff where applicable.

Enter and retrieve data using computer terminals; maintain journals and ledgers; prepare analytical reports on revenues and expenditures.

Perform auditing tasks and prepare calculations for billing for County services; distribute funds according to regulations.

Maintain cost, financial, and statistical records; support accounting processes and policies as assigned.

Respond to questions involving technical data, policies, and procedures; refer policy matters to supervisor as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements Knowledge of:

Basic accounting principles, governmental accounting and budgeting, modern office methods and equipment; general understanding of related laws and accounting systems; familiarity with data processing accounting systems.

Ability to:

Perform paraprofessional accounting work with minimal supervision; prepare accurate financial summaries and reports; perform arithmetic quickly and accurately; maintain complex records; interpret data processing reports; type accurately; supervise and/or coordinate clerical staff as needed; follow directions; use spreadsheet and database software; communicate effectively; maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications Either:

The completion of accounting courses for an Associate of Arts degree in accounting AND two (2) years of experience in financial recordkeeping comparable to a Senior Account Clerk or higher with Shasta County; OR

Three (3) years of full‑time, increasingly responsible technical, advanced journey‑level experience in financial, accounting, or statistical record keeping activities. Formal education in basic accounting or bookkeeping may substitute for the experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
