Paraprofessional III (Severely Handicapped Special Education Environment)

specifies under the direction of the Classroom Teacher, Principal or Designee, duties including classroom assistance, instructional support, and individual student assignment. Essential functions

Assists instructional personnel in assigned instructional areas. Tutors individual students and small groups of students with special needs to reinforce learning and training activities. Assists in shaping appropriate social behaviors. Manages acting out student behavior using positive reinforcement and other techniques. Operates and assists with instructional aids, computer-assisted instruction equipment and software. Monitors and assists in remediation of specific learning problems and conditions. May administer medication in accordance with medical instructions. Performs routine first aid and requests assistance for non-routine injury or illness. Observes and monitors children with handicapping conditions and requests appropriate assistance when distress is observed. Maintains an orderly, positive learning environment and may participate in parent conferences and progress reporting. Provides skill-building activities for children with language and hearing disorders; interacts with students to encourage performance and observe progress. Shares observations with the teacher and maintains confidentiality. Assists with campus supervision and discipline as assigned; assists teacher with materials, record keeping, and media equipment. Performs screen-testing when requested. Follows school rules and attends in-services, conferences and staff meetings as assigned. Assists students with personal needs (e.g., personal hygiene, toileting, feeding) as necessary. Performs other related duties as assigned. Required qualification

Must meet the requirements of No Child Left Behind . Knowledge & abilities

Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Child guidance principles for students with special needs. Behavior management strategies for pupils with typical control problems; awareness of special needs and student behavior. Safe practices in classroom and playground activities; basic instructional methods and classroom procedures. Oral and written communication skills; ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to follow directions and establish cooperative working relationships; observe health and safety regulations. Education & experience

Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. Typical path: experience working with children in an organized setting (Paraprofessional); education from high school with training in child growth and development, special education, instructional technology, or related fields.
