Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) – Air Quality Division Job Location: 1110 W. Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85007 Salary: Level 1: $60K-$65K; Level 2: $65K-$75K; Level 3: $80K-$85K Grade: 24-26 Closing Date: Open Until Filled Job Summary This Environmental Engineer will support the ADEQ’s Air Quality Team. This position will be responsible for drafting air quality permits, including drafting conditions that are enforceable and ensure compliance with state and federal air pollution laws and regulations. Review and processing of detailed technical reports received from the regulated community. Remote Work This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements). The State of Arizona supports a remote work program; all work, including remote work, should be performed within Arizona unless an exception is authorized in advance. Job Duties Review and evaluate environmental permit applications, reports, facility designs, plans, and cost estimates. Develop permits, action plans, and recommendations based on review and evaluation of applicable environmental regulations. Participate in site visits, data collection, inspections, and investigations regarding environmental topics. Review technical/program documents and applications. Perform environmental calculations based on provided methodologies. Provide technical assistance to the regulated community, staff, and the public pertaining to environmental impact and regulation. Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) State and Federal environmental regulations pertaining to air quality. Environmental or Chemical engineering and technology principles and practices. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Agency policies at state and federal levels. Excel-based mathematical computation of emission estimates. Atmospheric chemical transformations and pollution reduction techniques. Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Word. Ability to develop and write technical documentation and to interpret environmental rules and statutes. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills; problem-solving and attention to detail. Ability to balance, prioritize, and organize multiple tasks to meet deadlines; synthesize feedback and adjust plans; summarize tasks and recommendations to senior staff. Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations and related engineering concepts. Selective Preference(s) Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Chemical Engineering. Level 1: 0-2 years’ experience; Level 2: 2 years’ experience (Master’s or Doctorate may substitute for 2 years); Level 3: 5 years’ experience (Master’s can substitute for 2 years; Doctorate can substitute for 4 years). Engineer in Training/Fundamentals in Engineering certification required for Level 3 (Arizona Board of Technical Registration or reciprocal jurisdiction). Driver’s license – possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license.
