Police Officers perform responsible protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty police assignments. Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned.

Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to the citizens may be assigned. Operate a patrol vehicle to observe violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order during assigned shifts; Respond to dispatched calls such as domestic situations, alarms, advice calls, etc.; Enforce local and state laws and issue summonses for parking and traffic violations; Use radar and conduct traffic checks; Interview suspects, witnesses, and victims regarding reported crimes and complete detailed incident reports; Obtain and serve warrants, make arrests, and testify in court; Maintain various records and files such as personal court appearances; Conduct crime scene searches, collect and preserve evidence, and submit lab reports; Investigate and report traffic accidents and direct traffic when necessary; Assist with criminal investigations, conduct stakeouts, present evidence, interview victims and witnesses, and perform property and evidence duties; Report unsafe conditions in streets or other public facilities; Prepare detailed reports; Respond to animal control calls when animal warden is unavailable; Assist at special events such as crowd control at parades and VIP security; Provide public services such as unlocking vehicles and escorts; Serve as field training officer and instruct junior officers in police procedures, practices, techniques, equipment use, and departmental policies; Participate in tactical responses to threat situations such as terrorism, hostage situations, and disasters or accidents.

Additional Duties

Other duties to provide direct or indirect service to citizens may be assigned. During emergencies or declared States of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments to ensure service delivery.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be 21 years of age by graduation from the police academy. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply and may be eligible for certification pay. Possession of valid Driver's License issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia and an acceptable driving record according to City criteria; Must complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. Higher levels of NIMS training may be required as appropriate.
