Position: Accounting Technician I

What will I do as an Accounting Technician I? Performs technical accounting work, including general accounting, accounts payable and receivable, cost and fund accounting, budget support, auditing, financial reporting, capital asset management, and statement preparation. Supports department-wide accounting functions by handling the full accounting cycle, from setting up records and balancing ledgers to making adjustments, closing entries, and generating reports. Classifies and records accounting transactions, interprets policies and guidelines, and processes financial activities such as encumbrances, cost allocations, vendor payments, employee reimbursements, cash receipts, and revolving fund reimbursements. Ensures accurate financial reporting by apportioning expenditures, recognizing deferred revenues and receivables, settling accrued revenues and expenses, and calculating asset depreciation. Prepares financial documents, including journal vouchers, internal vouchers, and cash receipts, to adjust entries for revenue and expenditure allocations. Develops statistical, cost, and operational reports, financial statements, budget summaries, and final accounting for construction and other projects. We are looking for individuals who have: Completed 12 semester or 18 quarter units of accounting, including a course in Advanced Accounting, Cost Accounting, Governmental Accounting, Auditing, or Accounting Information Systems in an accredited college or university. One year of accounting clerical experience. Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate's degree in Accounting or a closely related field may be substituted for one year of accounting clerical experience. Note: Lower-level accounting classes may be taken at a two-year community college if the units are transferable to a four-year college or university. Applicants are required to submit a photocopy of their official transcripts with the application. Official transcript details: a transcript must bear the college seal and be issued by the school’s Registrar; printouts from the institution’s website are not accepted. Closely related refers to fields that focus on core accounting practices, including but not limited to Finance and Auditing. The degree must meet the necessary accounting-related criteria; cases will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Veteran credit: If applicable, veterans may receive an additional 10% of the total points added to a passing score. A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related functions is required. Physical Class II – Light: light administrative and clerical work with occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds and some bending, stooping, or squatting; considerable ambulation may be involved. Examination and Test Information

Once requirements are identified, an invitation to the assessment process will be sent. The examination consists of two parts with a passing score of 70% for each part. Part I: Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), worth 50% (Conscientiousness, Service Professionalism, Quantitative Ability, Drive for Success, Numerical Calculation). Candidates must pass Part I to be considered for Part II. Part II: Multiple choice and/or simulation assessment(s), worth 50% (Accounts Payable/Receivable, Excel skills). Assessment components may be transferred from identical components used in other exams. Eligibility: The names of candidates with passing scores are placed on an eligible list for six months. Vacancies: The eligible list will be used to fill vacancies throughout Los Angeles County.
