Overview
Department of Biology — Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position starting August 2026 (subject to budgetary approval). Location: Sonoma.

Faculty Responsibilities In addition to teaching and scholarship, faculty are expected to engage in service to the University, profession, and community. Responsibilities include advising students, participating in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. Sonoma State supports the Teacher/Scholar model and emphasizes undergraduate research and other professional opportunities for students. Faculty are also expected to support the CSU Graduation Initiative 2025 through excellent teaching, advising, and mentoring. Review the University’s Reappointment, Tenure, and Promotion Policy. During the first two years of the probationary period, the instructional assignment will be reduced by two courses per academic year to support research and scholarship development and meeting retention, tenure, and promotion requirements. All faculty must work effectively in a multicultural environment.
Duties of the Position The Department of Biology seeks to hire a motivated scientist for a tenure-track position in the broadly defined area of microbiology. Potential areas include bacteriology, microbial pathogenesis, host-pathogen interaction, microbial genetics, microbial physiology, microbiome, environmental microbiology, or microbial ecology. The candidate will develop and maintain an externally funded research program and mentor students in our graduate program. Teaching responsibilities include introductory, upper-division, and graduate courses, including medical microbiology, and may include additional courses in the area of specialty.
Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Biology or related field
Post-doctoral experience with expertise in microbiology
Experience in teaching courses in related areas of expertise
Evidence of potential to conduct independent research and mentor research students in microbiology
Preferred Qualifications
Proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals
Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students in research settings
Experience teaching labs and lectures
Demonstrated potential for establishing an externally funded research program in microbiology
Demonstrated commitment to teaching undergraduates from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds, including first-generation students
Experience creating a student-centered learning environment with teaching effectiveness and/or pedagogical training
Rank and Salary Service credit depends upon academic preparation and professional experience. The anticipated salary range for this position is $90,000 to $100,000.
