Overview
Cape Fox subsidiary Eagle Health is seeking a Bacterial Core Lead Scientist to join our team in Fort Detrick, MD. This position is contingent upon contract award. Responsibilities
Conduct basic and applied research on specified bacterial threats in support of the BD and infectious disease program in BSL-3 laboratories; maintain BPRP status and comply with contract provisions and applicable regulations. Use computer to analyze data, prepare graphs, perform statistics, write lab notes and reports. Prepare quarterly and annual progress reports (four quarterly reports and one annual report per investigator) for DTRA. Present research findings at lab meetings (typically two per year) and participate in scientific meetings or symposia as required; attend approximately 2 meetings per conference or symposium (CONUS or OCONUS). Attend division meetings (approximately 12 per year) and deliver at least one presentation per investigator. Prepare at least one first-author manuscript for publication per year; prepare approximately two supporting-author scientific papers for publication. Maintain and manage ~6 microscope systems in laboratories and oversee ordering of microscopy systems and parts. Prepare BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs for Safety, Bio-surety, and CDC inspections four times a year. Plan and perform in vitro Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) testing of potential therapeutic compounds against Tier 1 bacteria; work with a 30-strain diversity set against 72 compounds per year. Plan and participate in small-animal studies (mouse, rat, rabbit) including drug administration, sample collection, and IACUC-compliant animal health exams. Participate in weekly lab meetings and assist in the development and design of current and future in vitro and in vivo work; may present posters at scientific conferences, possibly outside normal business hours. Plan and participate in small-animal BSL-2 pharmacokinetics and toxicology studies, including preparation of antibiotics, administration, and collection of blood and tissues for PK/PD analysis. Support the in vivo pharmacology research program and contribute to a multidisciplinary team to determine PK/PD relationships and efficacy of optimized leads. Assist in approximately four animal protocols involving bacterial pathogens. Participate in testing and purifying Bacillus anthracis components for efficacy studies; write, plan and execute one animal protocol. Perform approximately 24 ELISAs per year and process approximately 150 flow cytometry samples per year. Test for endotoxin and perform endotoxin remediation approximately 50 times per year. Purify approximately 16 bacterial products from culture supernatants per year. Conduct equipment inventory management twice a year in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories and perform monthly laboratory management tasks including safety functions and chemical inventory. Provide 1 scientific support monthly report to the TPOC by the last working day of the month, including materials, methods, data and data analysis; ensure monthly updates. Maintain a GLP training folder and remain compliant with GLP regulations when applicable. CS-PRP enrollment is required and will be maintained in accordance with contract provisions and applicable regulations. Experience working in BSL-3 laboratories; ability to maintain BPRP status and comply with related regulations. Strong data analysis, statistics, and documentation skills; proficiency with laboratory data management and report writing. Experience with in vitro antimicrobial testing (MIC), animal studies (in vivo pharmacology and PK/PD), and related regulatory compliance (IACUC, GLP). Ability to manage laboratory equipment, coordinate ordering of systems and parts, and supervise laboratory operations.
