Hull & Marine Liability Underwriter (Mid Level II or Sr. Level III) Zurich North America is seeking a Hull & Marine Liability Underwriter (Mid Level II or Sr. Level III) for our Specialties Ocean Marine Department to work out of our New York or Houston office. We may, at the sole discretion of the Hiring Manager, be open to basing the role out of other Zurich North America office locations.

While this position will be based out of a Zurich office, you will have the flexibility to work on a hybrid basis. You will partner with your manager to set a flexible work schedule that supports you, our customers, and our brokers and agents. This role will require you to be visible in the marketplace to meet with our agents and brokers and be in the office/market three days per week.

In this role you will have the opportunity to develop and utilize your marketing / analytical skills along with your knowledge of marine operations to analyze and underwrite new and renewal marine hull and liability insurance business. As a member of Zurich's Underwriting Team, you will fully apply and hone your underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with select brokers in the marine insurance segment.

Responsibilities

Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

Develop, maintain & collaborate with Line of Business representatives and other business-related needs, as appropriate.

Develop and maintain relationships with distributors (agents & brokers) in support of business retention and acquisition; work with customers and distributors to determine their insurance needs and provide solutions; collaborate with marine specialists and global brokers.

Support the organization's sales culture by being a Help Point for agents, brokers and customers.

Proactively seek renewal and new account opportunities, including cross-sell with other Zurich North America departments (e.g., Construction and Energy Casualty).

Complete detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.

Qualify accounts to meet Zurich's appetite while balancing sound business opportunities.

Make broker/customer and on-site calls with a planned and well-prepared purpose.

This role offers a dynamic opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of the marine hull and liability insurance business while developing your expertise in underwriting and sales. The hiring level will be determined based on the candidate's experience and skill set relative to the listed qualifications.

Qualifications – Hull & Marine Liability Underwriter (Mid-Level II)

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in underwriting or market-facing area; OR

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in underwriting or market-facing area; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area AND knowledge of lines of business and regulatory guidelines.

Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Qualifications – Hull & Marine Liability Underwriter (Sr. Level III)

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in underwriting or market-facing area; OR

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in underwriting or market-facing area; OR

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support area AND knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Experience working in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree

CPCU / AMIM / or ARM a plus

Established broker relationships

Ability to effectively assess risk

Strong negotiation skills

Strong retail broker relationships

Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win-win negotiating

Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines

Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflective of progression of positions of increasing responsibility

PC and related software skills

Compensation and Benefits At Zurich, compensation for roles is influenced by a variety of factors, including office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. Zurich commits to providing a fair and reasonable compensation range for each role. Additional rewards may include short-term incentive bonuses and merit increases. The nationwide salary ranges for this position are provided below and may be adjusted for geographic location.

The combined salary range for this position is $75,000.00 - $165,000.00. The proposed salary range for the Mid-Senior is $75,000.00 - $125,000.00, with a short-term incentive bonus eligibility of 10%. For the Senior is $98,500.00 - $165,000.00, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%.
