The Opportunity In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Function as a technical specialist or in a lead substation design role encompassing EHV transmission level voltage class.
Under general direction, develop and apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems.
Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects.
May be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output.
Lead other engineers and interface directly with clients.
Be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects as a leader within a team environment.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited program.
Minimum of 8 years related work experience.
Pre-employment onboarding requirements may include background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws.
Preferred Qualifications
Power/Power Systems experience preferred
Quality Assurance and Quality Control of EHV substation design projects
EHV Substation design experience (physical & P&C)
Technical experience preferred
Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection
Prepare one-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment
Prepare auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations and wiring diagrams for relaying panels
Perform complex engineering calculations/studies related to substation projects
Create RTU control, status and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules, maintenance/signage and nameplates
Prepare equipment arrangement, grounding, foundation and conduit plans for high voltage substations
Review shop drawings, vendor quotes and perform bid evaluations
Develop construction release documents
Experience with 500kV - 13.8kV substations; open air and/or GIS; bus configurations
Raceway, grounding, and plan/section drawings
Manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements; delegate and supervise work; communicate status updates

Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards:
Develop and maintain budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projects
Perform EHV substation design, including physical design and protective relaying/control
Develop scoping documents for EHV substation projects
Provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, codes and B&V policies
Assist in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards
Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines
Quality/Continuous Improvement:
Apply knowledge and comply with Black & Veatch quality program
Conduct internal QA reviews and guidance to others
Support continuous improvement and change management
Engineering Production:
Prepare complex engineering deliverables for larger/multiple projects
Conduct research and recommendations for equipment/material selection
Manage data for engineering work and perform complex calculations
Manage budgets, schedules, and quality; review lower-level work
Lead larger production teams or coordinate multi-discipline activity; serve as responsible charge for a project
Project Coordination:
Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects
Manage work assignments and ensure quality from direct reports
Participate in management, project scheduling and resource planning meetings
Client Focus:
Interface directly with clients, vendors and subcontractors
Communicate client interests to project team and adapt work accordingly
Support business development or pursuit activities
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology:
Serve as technical specialist and provide guidance to project teams
Support multiple projects on complex technical challenges
People Management:
Assist with performance management, mentoring, recognition and corrective actions
Participate in career planning and development; mentor less experienced engineers
Possibly supervise engineers and technicians
Resource Management:
Implement resource management strategy for engineering resources
Manage resources for small groups within a single discipline
Work Environment/Physical Needs Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
