Yes The Opportunity In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Function as a technical specialist or in a lead substation design role encompassing EHV transmission level voltage class. Under general direction, develop and apply advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems. Provide technical guidance over a group or supervise engineering staff on substation design projects. May be responsible for developing, validating, and presenting specialist/technical output. Lead other engineers and interface directly with clients. Be responsible for the overall execution and quality of substation projects as a leader within a team environment. Black & Veatch provides complete engineering, procurement, and construction services in the following areas: Substations Overhead Transmission Lines Underground Transmission Lines Renewables Integration HVDC/FACTs Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 8 years related work experience. Pre-employment onboarding requirements may include background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws. Preferred Qualifications Power/Power Systems experience preferred Quality Assurance and Quality Control of EHV substation design projects EHV Substation design experience (physical & P&C) Technical experience preferred Performs complex research and develops recommendations for equipment and/or materials selection Prepare one-lines, connection diagrams, panel elevations and protection & control schematics for power substation equipment Prepare auxiliary power equipment sizing calculations and design wiring diagrams for protective relaying panels Perform complex engineering calculations/studies related to substation projects (lightning protection, conduit fill, AC/DC station service loading, surge arrester sizing, voltage drop) Create RTU control, status and analog point lists, raceway/cable schedules, signage and nameplates Prepare equipment arrangement, grounding, foundation and conduit plans for high voltage substations Review shop drawings, vendor quotes and perform bid evaluations Develop construction release documents Experience with 500kV – 13.8kV substations, various voltage classes Experience with open air and/or GIS Experience with different bus configurations Raceway drawings, grounding drawings, plan and section drawings Manage budget, schedule, and quality; delegate and supervise work; communicate status to management Other experience preferred Written Communications Drive For Results Priority Setting Planning Delegation Directing Others Conflict Management Informing Listening Dealing with Ambiguity And Building Effective Teams Advanced knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides and standards Key Responsibilities Engineering Standards: Develop and maintain budgets and schedules for multiple substation design projects Perform EHV substation design, including physical design, protective relaying/control with emphasis on continuous improvement Develop scoping documents for EHV substation projects Provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and BV policies Assist in developing, maintaining and updating engineering standards Provide technical guidance to others on projects and disciplines Quality/Continuous Improvement: Independently apply knowledge and comply with BV quality program for assigned tasks Ensure compliance with BV quality program while performing internal Quality Assurance reviews Provide guidance to others and support continuous improvement Engineering Production: Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects Oversee data collection, assimilation, and management for engineering work Prepare complex engineering calculations Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements Review lower level engineering work Lead larger production teams or coordinate multiple discipline activity Project Coordination: Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects Manage work assignments and ensure quality from direct reports Participate in project planning meetings Client Focus: Interface directly with clients, vendors and subcontractors Communicate client interests to project team and develop approaches to address them Support business development or pursuit activities Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Serve as a technical specialist and provide guidance to project teams in a practice area Support multiple projects on complex technical challenges People Management: Assist with performance management, mentoring, and development Mentor less experienced engineers; may supervise engineers and technicians Provide feedback on performance Resource Management: Implement resource management strategy Manage engineering resources for small groups of a single discipline Work Environment/Physical Needs Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
