Overview
Electrical Engineer - Power System Protection Black & Veatch is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Engineer to join our Protective Relay Settings Team. The ideal candidate has significant working experience and knowledge of Protection & Control (P&C) design concepts, relay setting calculations/setting file development, relay manufacturer software platforms, and power system analysis & modeling software. The position is located in Overland Park, KS with the option to relocate to regional offices listed in the original posting. Responsibilities
Function as a technical subject matter expert and specialist. Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices and client requirements. Work with system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM). Develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms (SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.). Develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes. Continues developing knowledge and may provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies; provide technical guidance to others on projects and disciplines. Independently apply knowledge and ensure compliance with B&V quality programs; support continuous improvement and change management efforts. Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment/materials; manage data for engineering work; prepare complex calculations; manage budget, schedule, and quality requirements. Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects; assist with identifying client interests and drivers and develop approaches to address them in project performance. Lead or support project teams, coordinate multiple disciplines, and act as responsible charge for a project when applicable. Mentor and develop junior staff; contribute to resource management and proposal development as needed. Participate in performance management, coaching, and career development activities as appropriate. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 5 years related work experience. Preferred Qualifications
8-10 years of experience in Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation. Experience with Protection & Control design concepts including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring, etc. 8 years of experience in development of protective relay settings. Experience with system modeling software (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.). Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies for Transmission, Distribution, and Renewable Substations. Experience with Mathcad and Excel for protective setting calculations. Knowledge of communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus, etc.). Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV) and its implementation. Knowledge of NERC-PRC standards and other industry standards. Strong written communication and client coordination skills; ability to lead small projects including schedules, budgets, and staffing. Leadership skills and ability to train and develop early career professionals. Experience in QC/QA and a PE license in the state of residence or project needs. Certifications
Professional Engineer License (U.S. PE), preferred Work Environment
