Black & Veatch is seeking an experienced Power System Protection Engineer with a preferred 8-10 years of experience to join our Protective Relay Settings Team. The ideal candidate has significant working experience and knowledge of Protection & Control (P&C) design concepts, relay setting calculations / setting file development, relay manufacturer software platforms, and power system analysis & modeling software. In this role, you will have the opportunity to: Function as a technical subject matter expert and specialist. Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices and client requirements. Work with system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM). Develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms (SEL AcSELerator Quickset, GE Enervista, etc.). Develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes. The ideal candidate will be located or willing to relocate to our World Headquarters in Overland Park, KS (Kansas City), or one of the following Regional Office Locations: Phoenix, AZ; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Ann Arbor, MI; Raleigh, NC. Key Responsibilities
Develop knowledge and provide guidance on design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes and B&V policies. Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines. Apply knowledge and comply with B&V quality program relative to assigned tasks; may ensure compliance and provide guidance to others. Support continuous improvement and change management. Prepare complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment/materials selection; manage data for engineering work; prepare engineering calculations; manage budgets, schedules, and quality requirements; delegate tasks to develop depth of project execution; review work; lead production teams or coordinate multiple discipline activity as appropriate. Coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex projects. Assist with identifying client interests and drivers on low to moderately complex projects; communicate interests to project team and develop approaches to accommodate concerns; support business development or pursuit activities. Act as a technical specialist, provide consultation and guidance to project teams; design complete projects of moderately complex scope or support multiple projects on complex challenges; mentor and foster knowledge management; apply advanced engineering concepts. Support performance management, mentoring, recognition, and development; participate in career planning and learning; mentor lower level professionals and identify successors. May assist with resource management strategy and engineering resources for small groups. May be accountable for administrative responsibilities including implementing policies, ensuring adherence to programs, approving timesheets and expense reports. Qualifications
Preferred: 8-10 years of experience in Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation industry. Experience with Protection & Control design concepts including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring, etc. 8 years of experience with development of protective relay settings. Experience with system modeling software (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM, etc.). Knowledge of protection schemes and philosophies in Transmission, Distribution, and Renewable Substations. Experience with Mathcad and Excel for protective setting calculations. Experience with communication protocols (DNP, SEL, MMS, Modbus, etc.). Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV) and its implementation. Knowledge and application of NERC-PRC standards and other industry standards. Ability to develop written communication and coordinate with team members and clients; able to work in a team; ability to lead small projects including schedules, budgets, and staffing. Experience supporting proposal development (scope of work, engineering estimates, schedule). Strong leadership and mentoring skills for early career professionals. Experience functioning in a QC/QA capacity. Active Professional Engineer (PE) License in State of Residence or project needs. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum of 5 years related work experience. Certifications
Professional Engineer License (U.S. PE), preferred Work Environment
