Overview

Mission Cancer + Blood, part of University of Iowa Health Care, is seeking a Pharmacy Specialist to provide comprehensive pharmaceutical care, primarily supporting patients at Mission Cancer + Blood infusion centers and clinics. The pharmacist will serve as Pharmacist-In-Charge with functional supervision of technicians and support staff, provide clinical support, medication order review and verification, education, and monitoring for patients receiving therapy at the infusion center. The role may include remote clinical and operational pharmacy services for offsite locations. This position is located in Des Moines, Iowa, with possible weekend and holiday hours on a rotating basis. Duties / Responsibilities

Patient Care – Provision of Pharmaceutical Care:

Review medication orders, monitor therapy, and evaluate chemotherapy protocols for appropriateness; provide patient education on chemotherapy regimens and supportive care medications; prepare, check, and dispense medications, including sterile compounds and hazardous drugs; inspect and verify compounded sterile products using IV workflow technology; collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to address patient needs and prevent adverse drug events; document all patient care activities in the electronic medical record; ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, continuing education, and department competencies. Operative Initiatives to Enhance Patient Care:

Serve as a patient advocate for drug therapy; participate in hospital-wide programs (e.g., Medication Use Evaluation, Adverse Drug Reaction Reporting) as quality surveillance and education tools; address medication system issues, remote data analysis, and collaboration with healthcare teams; participate in quality audits; support problem-solving and prescriber education through in-person or virtual consultations; contribute to protocols for prescribing, dispensing, and monitoring medications in the infusion suite or home use; supervise sterile compounding operations and staff in compounding areas. Educational Services:

Educate students, staff, healthcare providers, and patients about drugs and their appropriate use; serve as a preceptor for pharmacy students and residents; present educational sessions and mentor other pharmacists. Research:

Participate in research activities as appropriate, including support for Investigational Drug Service prescriptions; precept pharmacy resident research and encourage presentation/publication of findings. Other:

Complete all required competencies and educational requirements; perform other duties as assigned to support the desired workflow. Qualifications

Education:

Pharm.D. degree or a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. Required:

Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy practice residency OR 2 years’ experience in a complex multidisciplinary healthcare environment; current licensure in good standing by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; commitment to a welcoming and respectful environment; relevant job-related experience and service-excellence mindset. Desirable:

Oncology experience; ASHP-accredited PGY2 Oncology residency;.board certification in oncology; experience with sterile compounding, USP 797, and USP 800; immunization certification; professional customer service experience. Application Process
