JOB SUMMARY Licensed Clinical Social Worker is the second and fully-qualified, full-proficiency level of professional social work for employees who are licensed by the State of California as Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW). Positions at this level have substantial professional responsibility and independence of action for providing social work services. Social Work Clinician is the entry, developmental, and first working level of professional social work for employees who are recent graduates as well as those who have professional social work experience but are not yet licensed as LCSW by the State of California. The Social Work Job Family consists of three levels: Social Work Clinician, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Advanced Clinical Social Worker. This job family requires a Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW). As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, medical social workers provide psychosocial interventions to patients and families, address biopsychosocial issues, assess social needs, and develop treatment plans with advocacy, counseling, referrals, and practical assistance. They provide consultation, orientation, and training to health care staff on biopsychosocial, cultural, and economic factors affecting patient care, and advocate for social work values within Stanford Medicine and the broader community. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The essential functions listed are typical examples of work performed by positions in this job classification. They are not a comprehensive inventory of all duties. Employees must abide by Joint Commission requirements and hospital policies and procedures, including safety, quality, ethics, and licensure requirements. Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Makes mental health diagnoses as part of a treatment plan when needed. Provides individual/group clinical supervision to MSWs and student interns. Prepares and maintains electronic medical records; provides written and oral reports and hand-offs. Conducts psychosocial assessments of patients/families to evaluate needs and barriers to care; develops treatment plans. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to devise psychosocial treatment plans and coordinates referrals to entitlement programs and other services. Provides supportive counseling, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and other therapies; assists with coping and transitions in care. Manages caseloads and participates in team conferences and interdisciplinary rounds. Participates in quality assurance and policy development related to social work services. Social Work Clinician: Prepares and maintains electronic medical records; provides reports and hand-offs. Conducts psychosocial assessments and identifies barriers to care. Collaborates with care teams to implement psychosocial treatment plans and coordinate referrals and services. Manages caseloads and participates in team conferences and rounds. Provides counseling and psychoeducation; supports transition from youth to adult services. Participates in quality assurance and community improvement efforts related to social work services. Note:

The job family includes three levels with flexibly staffed advancement from Social Work Clinician to Advanced Licensed Clinical Social Worker based on qualifications, caseload, and independent practice. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and possession of required licenses/certifications. Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Education: Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution. Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible and related work experience. License/Certification: Valid California Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Social Work Clinician: Education: Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program. Successful completion of MSW program prior to state date. Preferred: Pediatric social work experience; healthcare experience. KNOWLEDGE For both Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Social Work Clinician: ability to apply medical social work theories and practices in a hospital setting; data gathering to assess patient and family needs; caseload management; confidentiality; written narratives and reports; interviewing and counseling techniques; knowledge of hospital resources and patient care needs. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Positions are allocated to three grade levels and are flexibly staffed. Vacancies may be filled at any level based on qualifications; career progression is possible with promotion recommendations. Levels are distinguished by qualifications, caseload, and the degree of independent practice. Social Work Clinician: May be assigned to a California Children’s Services (CCS) clinic; if so, requires MSW and five years of full-time social work experience with CCS-eligible cases. Pay Range Compensation is based on level and requirements. Typical starting salary is at the minimum to mid-range.
