Overview

Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) is the second and fully-qualified level of professional social work for employees licensed by the State of California as LCSWs. The Social Work Job Family in this role includes three levels of professional non-management social work in a health care institutional setting: Social Work Clinician, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and Advanced Clinical Social Worker. The position requires a Master of Social Work (MSW) from an accredited school of social work. As a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, medical social workers provide psychosocial interventions to patients and their families, address biopsychosocial issues, assess social needs related to health status, and contribute to treatment planning, advocacy, counseling, referrals, and practical assistance to achieve objectives. They provide consultation, orientation, and training on psychosocial, cultural, and economic factors affecting patient care and advocate for social work values and ethics within Stanford Medicine and the broader community. Social Work Clinician is the entry and developmental level for recent graduates or for those with social work experience who are not yet licensed as an LCSW. The role description emphasizes adherence to Joint Commission requirements, patient rights, safety, ongoing education, and quality programs, as well as compliance with hospital policies and the Code of Conduct. Essential Functions

Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Make mental health diagnoses as part of a treatment plan as needed. Provide individual and group clinical supervision to MSWs and student interns. Prepare and maintain electronic medical records; provide written and oral reports and hand-offs. Conduct psychosocial assessments of patients and families to evaluate social, emotional, and physical needs; identify barriers to care. Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement patient/family psychosocial treatment plans; coordinate referrals to specialty and social services and record progress notes and continuity of care. Assist patients and families in coping with environmental and psychological issues of illness. Manage an independently assigned caseload of varying clinical acuity. Engage in case finding for psychosocial needs; attend team conferences and interdisciplinary rounds as needed. Provide supportive counseling, grief counseling, crisis intervention, and other therapeutic services; assist with coping, information processing, and changes in functioning and care needs. Provide psychoeducation regarding adaptation to diagnosis, illness, treatment, and prognosis; assist with transition from youth to adult services. Participate in quality assurance and community improvement, and contribute to policy and procedure development for social work services. Social Work Clinician: Prepare and maintain electronic medical records; provide written and oral reports and hand-offs. Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, along with any required licenses or certifications, is qualifying. Licensed Clinical Social Worker: Education: Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited program. Experience: Two (2) years of progressively responsible and related work experience. License/Certification: Valid LCSW license issued by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Social Work Clinician: Education: Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW) from an accredited program; Successful completion of MSW prior to state date. Preferred Skills:

Pediatric social work experience; healthcare experience KNOWLEDGE These attributes and skills are required to perform the essential functions and are demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or licensure/certification. Knowledge for both roles: Apply theories, principles, and practices of medical social work and social services delivery in a hospital/medical center. Gather data to assess patient and family needs; manage a caseload and maintain confidentiality; determine appropriate action in emergencies. Provide written case narratives and reports; apply assessment, interviewing, and counseling techniques; understand hospital resources to meet patient needs. Understand needs, problems, attitudes, and behavior of hospital patients and families. Physical Requirements

Position and Pay Positions are allocated to one of three grade levels. They may be flexibly staffed from Social Work Clinician to Advanced LCSW, with vacancies filled at any level based on qualifications. Levels are distinguished by: (1) licensure as an LCSW; (2) caseload complexity and required professional judgment; (3) degree of independent practice. Social Work Clinician (CCS clinic) If assigned to a CCS clinic, a clinician must meet the following: Master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited school. Five years of full-time social work experience including work with CCS-eligible conditions and families. Pay Range Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary ranges reflect education, experience, and market factors. New team members typically join at the minimum to mid salary range. SWC:
