Overview
Assistant Vice President - Renewable Energy Electrical Engineering opportunity at WSP in the U.S. Location: Irvine, CA (also considered: Los Angeles, CA, Riverside, CA). This role is part of the Renewables team in the West. Responsibilities
Provide high-level technical assistance and guidance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of commercial and industrial scale renewable energy projects. Develop electrical models and reports for detailed electrical design of a wide range of project sizes; prepare documentation to advise on materials, installations, design, components, and construction specifications. Ensure deliverables meet or exceed industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Coordinate, review, and approve electrical infrastructure design plans for smaller and less-complex projects, ensuring data integrity and compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations. Apply high-level electrical engineering techniques to identify improvements across concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation. Perform professional electrical engineering work related to single-line and three-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangement, schematics, cable schedules, and grounding schematics within applicable rules and permits. Plan and incorporate future-ready design strategies including equipment sizing, AC/DC panel design, cabling, and conduit/trenching that ensure safety and functionality. Review electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, grounding, short-circuit, protection device coordination, and one-line diagrams. Develop and review plans, specifications, cost estimates, construction safety and phasing plans, and updated electrical layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients. Manage design and construction of electrical infrastructure projects from inception to completion, including new construction, renovations, site development, and safety plans. Oversee cross-functional teams to execute project work, manage budgets, track hours/expenses, monitor materials, and prepare regulatory and technical memos. Prepare data visualizations, calculations, and technical visuals for interpretation or presentation of findings. Prepare technical reports and presentations to address design and construction issues or opportunities. Maintain high quality and responsiveness to client requirements in alignment with industry standards. Provide guidance and training to entry-level engineers related to electrical modelling and simulations. Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, and clients professionally; collaborate on Federal, State, regional, and local projects and proposals. Stay current with latest electrical engineering techniques and practices. Exercise ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. 10+ years of relevant post-education experience delivering electrical design for capital projects in power generation and distribution at utility, industrial, or commercial scale. Engineer license preferred. Proficient with electrical engineering principles, design/build processes, and permitting issues. Extensive knowledge of infrastructure design and familiarity with renewable energy system design. Competence across adjacent disciplines (electrical, structural, mechanical, energy modeling). Experience with electrical infrastructure planning, design, and construction management across rehab, new design, and construction projects. Knowledge of relevant engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping requirements. Strong technical computing ability, plan-reading, and interpretation of plans/specifications with regulatory compliance. Ability to inspect and investigate construction and design aspects per applicable regulations and policies. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences. Self-leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and mentor junior team members, with QA/QC adherence. Proficiency with design software (Helioscope, PVsystem, EnergyToolbase, BIM360, Revit, AutoCAD, and other Autodesk products) and technical writing. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and data analysis capabilities. Experience coordinating and directing subcontractors to complete tasks safely and efficiently. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP health, safety, and harassment policies. Ability to meet project-specific travel demands. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering. NABCEP certification. Experience managing large projects with multiple engineers working in concert. WSP Benefits
