HDR is looking for a Control Systems Engineer To serve in a project leadership role supporting our national Control Systems practice, which includes full-service capabilities across multiple industries and market sectors, providing control system assessment, planning, design, automation programming/configuration, testing & commissioning, and maintenance. This role will focus mainly on building management systems (BMS) and automated facility support systems, working with clients and multidisciplinary teams to deliver comprehensive control system solutions for construction and implementation in sectors like tech, media & telecom, healthcare, research, and life sciences.
Primary Responsibilities
Work under the supervision of a Senior Control Systems Engineer to produce project deliverables such as instrumentation and controls specifications, instrumentation selection, sequence of operations development, and control system drawings.
Coordinate control system engineering work with multidisciplinary teams during design development and construction, including power coordination, panel locations, remote equipment monitoring, system integration, networking, and device placement.
Manage workload to ensure timely completion of documentation.
Track project financials, coordinate efforts, and adjust resources to stay within budget.
Conduct schematic and design development sessions with clients, as well as review shop drawings, respond to RFIs, and perform field observations on construction sites, developing reports accordingly.
Establish and maintain client relationships, participate in marketing, and contribute to design and production meetings related to instrumentation and control systems.
Utilize CADD software such as AutoCAD and Revit for developing and reviewing construction documents.
Report on project status, performance, and quality to the Control Systems Section Manager.
Growth Opportunities
Gain exposure to multiple market sectors and core services within our global control systems program.
Engage in training and development to become a subject matter expert in specific market sectors and services.
Serve as Engineer of Record for control system construction documents.
Participate in industry societies, trade shows, and conferences.
Advance to Senior Control Systems Engineer.
Preferred Qualifications
Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
Hands-on experience designing BMS systems.
Knowledge of network, PLC, or DDC hardware and software.
Understanding of HMI software and capabilities.
Familiarity with control systems and sequences of operations for building systems such as HVAC, electrical, monitoring, and lighting.
Experience with data center and healthcare projects is a plus.
Network design experience for BMS is advantageous.
Knowledge of communication protocols like BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus TCP/RTU, Ethernet/IP.
Understanding of cybersecurity considerations for control systems is a plus.
PLC and DDC programming skills are desirable.
Local candidates preferred.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field.
Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Experience with PLC/WTP and WWTP software programming.
Experience designing SCADA systems, including schematics and loops.
Project management experience in control systems.
Knowledge of automation hardware and software such as Allen-Bradley, Emerson, Siemens, etc.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
