Early Career Fire and Life Safety Engineer
for multiple offices: Arlington, VA; Boston, MA; Columbia, MD; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; and New York, NY. This opportunity involves working on fire and life safety (FLS) projects to meet client objectives using innovative technology. This is an unpaid internship, with service members continuing to receive military pay and benefits. Your Impact Key Responsibilities: Research building code, life safety code, and fire code requirements, including familiarity with ICC and NFPA codes (IBC and NFPA 101). Assist with the design of fire protection and life safety systems, including automatic fire sprinkler, fire detection and alarm, smoke management, and egress systems. Assist in preparing fire engineering calculations including smoke modeling and evacuation analysis, from simple hand calculations to complex 3D computational modeling. Assist in the commissioning of fire alarm, fire suppression, smoke control, and life safety systems. Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry‑level technical assistance on code requirements, calculations, and design strategies to develop performance‑based solutions. Under general supervision, assist with review of architectural drawings for compliance with building and fire code requirements; help produce fire safety strategy (basis of design) documents to inform design decisions. Complete training on assigned tasks and adhere to safety and professional conduct policies. Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs. Who You Are Minimum Requirements Open to active‑duty military members, preferably with a background in technical fields. Must have authorization and approval from a unit commander to participate in the SkillBridge program. Education Bachelor or Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (with fire protection focus). 0 to 1 year of fire protection and life safety experience. Skillsets: Excellent research and analytical thinking skills. Strong interpersonal and communication skills to engage with engineering and non‑engineering audiences. Self‑leadership with attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization in a dynamic environment. Ability to work independently and as part of a team; capable of basic technical writing and spreadsheet use. Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s safety policies. Willingness to travel occasionally as project needs require. Preferred Skillsets/Qualifications Engineer in Training Certification. Knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD. Experience in fire protection engineering design applications. Prior internship in fire protection engineering. Active participation in professional fire protection organizations.
