Early Career Fire and Life Safety Engineer - Buildings

WSP is initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Fire and Life Safety Engineer for the following offices: Arlington, VA; Boston, MA; Columbia, MD; Dallas, TX; Houston, TX; Nashville, TN; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY. Be involved in projects with our Fire and Life Safety (FLS) Team and help meet client objectives by applying innovative and cutting-edge technology. Your Role Takes part in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, building, testing, and inspecting of fire and life safety systems on building projects in the public and private sector. Tasks may include basic assistance with research, design, concept development, installation, operation, maintenance, and integration of automatic sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification, smoke control, egress analysis, and building and fire code analysis review and compliance. Generates accurate documentation and ensures responsibilities are delivered to industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Your Impact

Under general supervision, assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from sites, surveys, blueprints, schematics, reports, and other sources for project development, design, and construction.

Assist with basic professional fire and life safety engineering work related to research and inspections of site conditions, equipment, resources, building infrastructure, usage, and systems to ensure conformance with applicable rules, standards, codes, and permits.

Perform routine engineering functions and provide entry-level technical assistance on design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies for proper installation and functioning of equipment and systems.

Assist with verifying site characteristics and providing technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues related to sprinkler, fire alarm, mass notification, smoke control, egress, commissioning, and code analysis/review.

Generate documentation and specifications using electronic systems, drawings, and field logs.

Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures and complete training on assigned tasks.

Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies; perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a closely related discipline.

0 to 1 year of relevant post-education experience.

Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.

Familiarity with design/build processes; knowledge of mechanical systems and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.

Detail-oriented with the ability to multi-task and work under general supervision or in a team.

Basic proficiency with technical writing, office software, and engineering tools; familiarity with AutoCAD or CAM.

Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to health, safety, and harassment policies.

Ability to work flexible schedules and travel as project requirements may dictate.

Occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

Engineer in Training Certification.

Prior internship related to the degree and discipline.

Participation in local professional practice organizations.

Knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD; experience in fire protection engineering design.
