Executive Director, Business Affairs - Radiation Oncology The Department of Radiation Oncology at WashU Medicine, part of the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, seeks a collaborative operations and finance leader for the Executive Director, Business Affairs. The Executive Director reports to the Chair and serves as a key member of the department leadership team. They oversee the department’s financial, HR, IT, facilities, and operational activities, helping to foster excellence in patient care, research, and education while ensuring the department's financial stability and growth.

As one of the largest and most innovative radiation oncology departments in the nation, we treat approximately 5,000 patients annually and are participating in 34 clinical trials. The Executive Director ensures that faculty and staff have the necessary resources and infrastructure to optimize productivity, quality, and compliance across our seven regional locations.

Primary Responsibilities

Directs all department business functions such as strategic planning, budgeting, finance, accounting, revenue cycle, information systems, purchasing, recruitment, and onboarding.

Ensures long-term financial stability and growth of the department while developing strategies for process improvement and revenue enhancement.

Collaborates with key managers to ensure all staff are well-trained, engaged, service-oriented, and productive.

Partners with both faculty and hospital leadership to resolve operational issues and proactively improve key processes to optimize efficiency and patient experience.

Oversees the department’s appointment center and revenue cycle operations, working closely with the director to optimize patient pre-arrival, reception, charge capture, billing, and collection operations; establishes policies, procedures, and standards to optimize reimbursements.

Administers faculty and staff compensation and incentive plans, develops analyses, and reviews year-end results with individual faculty.

Develops an annual department plan, including short and long-term goals and objectives; creates multi-year forecasts based on objectives; analyzes financial impacts of new initiatives and those associated with internal/external trends and changing regulations (e.g., reimbursement changes and grant opportunities).

Negotiates/recommends business aspects of contractual relationships, providing systems/procedures to implement contract administration.

Manages financial reporting, operational reporting, and benchmark analysis; communicates results with individuals, services, and the department.

Oversees communication and marketing plans to advertise/promote the department’s cutting-edge services, physicians, and locations.

Plans utilization of facilities and recommends allocation and use of new and remodeled space or service locations. Reviews and analyzes requests for space, recommending the allocation of space for research and academic programs to the Chair.

Represents the Department to the Medical School, University, and Hospital leadership. Participates in various committees and activities on both a routine and ad hoc basis.

Interacts with faculty, staff, trainees, hospital leadership, referring physicians, patients, and families positively and professionally.

Ensures the Department is compliant with WashU, School of Medicine, BJC Healthcare policies as well as applicable federal/state laws and regulations in all areas of operation.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a master’s degree in health administration, business, or a related field with a minimum of 10 years of progressive management experience in a healthcare/large group practice organization.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s plus 10 years in a leadership position in an academic or other related, multi-specialty group practice, faculty practice plan, or hospital service line.

Knowledge of cancer treatment processes, radiation oncology, radiology, or a related discipline is strongly preferred.

Ability to manage a large, complex multi-site academic department.

Communicates effectively (both oral and written) with faculty, staff, and leadership at all levels.

Team-oriented leadership style that fosters respect, inclusion, and collegiality.

Demonstrates high integrity and transparency.

Adept at influencing others without direct authority. Able to build positive relationships with key stakeholders.

Strong detail orientation and willingness to be hands-on with operational matters.

Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting and effective revenue cycle management.
