The University of Arizona's College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences (CALES) is seeking candidates for an Academic Advising Professional I (Academic Advisor I). The Academic Advisor I will serve as frontline contact to students in the Norton School of Human Ecology (HECL), within CALES. The advisor provides proactive, student-centered advising to undergraduate students, supporting their academic, personal, and professional development. As a key point of contact, the advisor helps students navigate university policies, select courses, connect with resources, and create academic plans aligned with their goals. This role fosters student engagement, promotes retention, and contributes to a positive university experience by building supportive relationships and connecting students with campus resources. The advisor maintains current knowledge of academic programs, college and university requirements to guide students effectively. Academic advisors guide students on their academic degree paths. There may be occasional evening and weekend work for student-related events. Duties & Responsibilities

Academic Advising & Retention: Provide routine academic advising for assigned undergraduate students via scheduled appointments, email, and drop in sessions. Help students select courses and develop academic plans that meet degree requirements, using established policies and advising protocols. Interpret degree audits and resolve minor discrepancies, referring non-routine issues to senior staff. Offer clear explanations of university regulations, deadlines, and procedural steps. Support and co-deliver success workshops and student-oriented events under guidance from more experienced advisors. Assist with preparing handouts and resources for workshops and orientation. Direct students to appropriate academic and personal support services. Maintain accurate student records in institutional systems in compliance with FERPA. Participate in departmental or curriculum meetings with a focus on advising-related topics. Support delivery of degree map updates or curriculum announcements as assigned. Participate in team meetings, staff trainings, and orientation sessions. Stay current on advising changes, policy updates, and professional development opportunities. Contribute ideas and questions to improve advising procedures and student outreach. Assist with recruitment fairs, open houses, and orientation activities. Carry out duties as assigned by advising leadership.

Academic Advising & Retention - Norton School Specific: Provides primary advising to all first-year students within each Norton School major – Fashion Industry's Science & Technology (FITS), Human Development & Family Science (HDFS), Personal & Family Financial Planning (PFFP), and Retailing & Consumer Science (RCSC). Provides advising support for additional students in the Norton School as needed, including advising for FITS, HDFS, PFFP, and RCSC majors and minors, and students exploring these programs. Assists with teaching 1-unit introductory courses for new students in the Norton School. Assists with planning and coordinating Student Services events. Represents Norton School at recruitment events on the University of Arizona campus and in the wider Tucson community; may involve occasional evening and weekend hours. Provides office management for Norton Student Services to ensure a welcoming environment that supports students seeking help, scheduling advising appointments, and referrals to campus resources. Coordinates student email communication by creating and sending weekly newsletters for all Norton School students. Assists with updating advising materials and the website to ensure information is accurate and current.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of theories and approaches related to academic advising, teaching, or counseling in higher education. Excellent written and verbal communication, including teaching and presentation skills. Proactive, open, and responsive interpersonal skills. Problem solving and creative thinking skills. Effective organizational skills. Evidence of collaborative work with others. Ability to quickly learn new policies, procedures, and technological systems. Knowledge of General Education curriculum requirements at the University of Arizona. Ability to develop basic printed materials and website content to assist advising and recruitment efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a field related to area of assignment. One year of academic advising experience.

Preferred Qualifications Master's degree in a field related to area of assignment. Previous experience serving undergraduate students in academic advising or other student-related services at the University of Arizona or similar higher education institution. Proficiency with University of Arizona Student Information Systems (UAccess). Experience using UAccess Analytics. Demonstrated successful experience working with post-secondary students.
