2nd Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (approx 50% travel with Security Clearance) Responsibilities

Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for interior communications.

Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels; troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities.

Apply basic and some advanced technical knowledge to solve routine problems by interpreting manufacturers' manuals or similar documents.

Work with understanding of circuit interrelationships, plan work sequence, select tools and testing instruments, and comply with accepted practices under supervision.

Under immediate supervision, receive technical guidance from a supervisor or higher-level technician.

Under guidance, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships.

Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic onboard Navy vessels.

Read and interpret schematics and blueprints; work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents, test documents, and reports.

Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist with diagnosing equipment to efficiently eliminate problems.

Remove and install cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under decks; repair and replace cables/connectors.

Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for complete installations.

Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications; maintain effective supervisor and manager communications.

Remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels.

Ensure adherence to established quality and safety procedures in installations and modifications.

Qualifications

Must be a US citizen.

Clearance: Must have a DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain and maintain one.

Education: High school diploma, GED, or industrial/trade school certificate.

Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels, MSC or Maritime vessels; practical shipboard experience with HM&E systems and equipment.

Familiarity with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS.

Ability to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a Biometric DBIS credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assignments.

Ability to work overtime and weekends as requested by management; ability to travel outside the Suffolk, VA area if required.

Experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors; possession of trade-specific hand tools.

Experience working in a team environment and effective communication skills.

Understanding and ability to meet NSI 009-73 requirements (shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair).

Experience with cable installations including banding, terminal boxes, connection boxes, connectors, penetrations, cableways, hangers, and related components.

Knowledge of bonding and grounding of electrical equipment; familiarity with NSI 009-25 (air testing of penetrations); electrical troubleshooting and testing with multimeters and megohmmeters.

Experience assisting with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and associated cabling.

Preferred certifications: NAVSEA Multipin Connector Certifications (NSI 009-73); NAVSEA Fiber Optic certification (NSI 009-123); NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications.

Vocational school or skilled trades certificate programs preferred.

Current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred.

OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus; Microsoft Office knowledge is a plus.

Physical Demands

Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and boxes; typical weight not less than 30 lbs.

Ability to climb ladders; work in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions, and in confined spaces.

May involve high heat, humidity, noise, and dirty conditions; may require working aloft or over vessel sides; may ride ships at sea for extended periods.

May require wearing a respirator.

Travel up to 50% within and outside of the continental United States.
