Overview
3rd Class Marine Electrician - Interior Communications (apx 50% with Security Clearance) – Suffolk, Virginia. 50% travel required within and outside of the continental United States. Work Schedule: Monday through Saturday 10 hours a day (as needed). Responsibilities
Marine Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for interior communications. Maintain and repair electrical systems on marine vessels; troubleshoot, repair, and maintain electronic equipment on board vessels and in shipyard facilities. Apply basic technical knowledge to perform simple or routine tasks following detailed instructions; replace components, wire circuits, repair simple electronic equipment; take test readings using instruments such as digital multimeters, signal generators, semiconductor testers, curve tracers, and oscilloscopes. Work under close supervision, receiving technical guidance from a supervisor or higher-level technician; work is checked frequently for accuracy. Under guidance, install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify equipment and structures by performing alterations and installations for fleet modernization on US Navy surface ships. Layout, fabricate, and install electrical wiring, coaxial cable, or fiber optic aboard Navy vessels; read and interpret schematics and blueprints; work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, work orders, technical documents and test documents. Troubleshoot, repair, and install electrical equipment and cables; assist with diagnosing equipment to eliminate problems; remove and install cables found overhead, along bulkheads, or under the deck; repair and replace cables/connectors. Apply understanding of production processes toward completion of complicated and non-routine tasks related to installations on shipboard systems and related equipment; inspect completed work for conformance to specifications. Maintain effective supervisor and manager communications; remove, plan, execute, install, and modify electrical cable, cableways, conductors, connectors, strain relief, fasteners, and equipment aboard naval vessels. Complete electrical and data conductor disconnections and reconnections on existing and new equipment for complete installations. Qualifications
Must be a US citizen. Clearance: Must have a DoD Secret clearance or ability to obtain and maintain one. Education: High school diploma, GED or industrial/trade school certificate. Minimum of 2–3 years of experience in operation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment on-board Navy vessels, U.S. Coast Guard vessels; MSC or Maritime vessels; practical shipboard HM&E experience. Must be familiar with one or more Interior Communications (IC) systems: MC, HYDRA, IVN, IVCN, SATCC, SIWCS. Must be able to access government installations by obtaining and maintaining a DBIS credential to perform work on-board US Naval vessels or government assignments. Must be able to work overtime and weekends; travel outside the Suffolk, VA area if required. Experience with Fiber Optic cables and multi-pin connectors; possess or provide trade-specific hand tools; able to work in a team and communicate effectively. Must have understanding and ability to accomplish NSI 009-73 requirements (inspection, testing, installation, removal, and repair of shipboard electrical cabling and electronic equipment; cable installations; bonding and grounding; air testing of penetrations; electrical troubleshooting with multimeters and megohmmeters). Experience assisting with troubleshooting, maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical distribution systems and related cabling; reading electrical drawings and schematics; safe usage of multimeters and megohmmeters; familiarity with NAVSEA Standard items. Preferred Qualifications
Candidates with current NAVSEA NSI 009-73 certifications are highly preferred. Candidates with NAVSEA NSI 009-123 fiber optic certification preferred; NAVSEA Cableway Improvement Program certifications preferred. Vocational school or skilled trades certificate program completion preferred; current or active DoD Secret clearance preferred; OSHA 10 Maritime Certification a plus; Microsoft Office knowledge a plus. Physical Demands
Must be able to lift and transport heavy equipment and boxes (exact weight determined per job, but not less than 30 lbs). Able to work on and climb ladders, in extreme temperatures, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. May require wearing a respirator and may ride ships at sea for extended periods.
