Overview
The South Dakota Board of Regents is hiring an
Assistant General Counsel
to join our team. In this role, you’ll handle a wide range of legal matters that touch every corner of higher education—employment and personnel, contracts, student affairs, FERPA compliance, public records requests, Title IX, academic freedom, intellectual property, risk management, and more. You’ll be part of a small, dedicated team serving the state’s public universities, helping to navigate complex legal issues while supporting students, faculty, and staff.
Responsibilities
Provide comprehensive legal advice to system staff and institutional leadership on federal regulations, state law, administrative rules, Board of Regents policies, and other higher education legal topics.
Advise Human Resources and Student Affairs offices on student and employment-related issues.
Review, draft, and analyze contracts; conduct legal research; support policy and procedure development.
Manage subpoenas and public records requests; assist with grievance processes.
Handle a variety of higher education legal matters, including Title IX, Clery Act, and FERPA, as directed by the General Counsel.
Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience
3 or more years’ experience practicing law in a related field.
Currently licensed to practice law in South Dakota, or ability to obtain licensure to practice in South Dakota within one year of hire.
Varying levels of experience may be acceptable to the hiring manager.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience practicing law in higher education, government practice, compliance, litigation, administrative or civil actions, employment or related area.
