Overview Designs, implements, and facilitates education, service learning, and learning-based recreation programming for a range of age levels within Manatee County's conservation properties. Assists with volunteer recruitment and training. Represents the County during outreach events such as festivals, outreach lecture opportunities, school science fairs, and other special events.
Responsibilities
Coordinate outreach programs, field trips to Manatee County's conservation properties, and presentations to schools, homeschool groups, HOAs, and library programs.
Serve as the main point of contact for special events within the County’s conservation properties and coordinate related administrative tasks (booking tours, camps, and rentals).
Manage rental and reservation software and assist with the management of educational classrooms, nature centers, and visitor centers.
Develop and present age-appropriate lesson plans to interpret Manatee County's natural and cultural resources.
Use resources such as local natural areas, scientific tools, technology (GPS units, nets, data collection tools, pH meters, refractometers), and live animals; develop new educational initiatives with technological advances.
Assist with animal husbandry, including care, enclosure cleaning, and feeding of live educational animals; maintain the Department's biofact collection (feathers, skulls, etc.).
Facilitate regular educational and passive recreational programming for a range of ages; present in an interpretive, hands-on, engaging, and inclusive manner while ensuring participant safety.
Lead educational programs, including public classes, private group requests, professional development trainings, offsite workshops, and school field trips.
Develop curriculum, lesson plans, and project plans for events, programs, field trips, outreach, camps, and related activities.
Assist with management of the Department's educational resources and volunteer program initiatives, including recruitment, retention, and coordination of volunteers; plan large-scale volunteer projects and appreciation events.
Facilitate volunteer training programs and develop new trainings; perform program administration tasks (check-in, site preparation, materials, cleanup).
Assist with schedules for outreach and promotional events; operate the Division’s outreach booth (setup, teardown, materials, inventory).
Mentor and occasionally supervise Division Student Interns; assist in training and supervising interns during volunteer workdays and educational programming.
Support evaluation and customer feedback initiatives; input data from surveys; assist with special surveys and data collection opportunities (visitor surveys).
Coordinate creation of interpretive materials (signage, brochures, education technology, and partner materials).
Assist with scheduling and registration for programs; respond to volunteer and program participant emails and calls.
Performs other related work, including weather or extreme emergency duties, as required.
Qualifications
Valid driver’s license required with Florida license within 30 days of hire.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Bachelor's degree in education, natural/environmental sciences, recreation, biology, or a related field.
Three or more years of experience working in an educational setting (informal or formal), including experience with volunteers.
Certifications required or must be obtained within 3 years of hire: Certified Interpretive Guide, Project WILD, FMSEA Aquatic Collector's Permit, Florida Master Naturalist.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: First Aid and CPR certifications are desired; strong classroom/field trip planning and delivery; ability to engage diverse ages; excellent written and verbal communication; computer literacy; ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines; attention to detail and organizational skills; knowledge of regulatory compliance and local ecosystems; familiarity with interpretive techniques and hands-on learning; experience creating digital educational content.
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function, including occasional weekends and evenings. A Bachelor’s degree and relevant certifications may be required for certain roles.
