About the Agency The Public Employees’ Retirement System of Mississippi (PERS) serves the state of Mississippi by providing retirement benefits for individuals working in state government, public schools, universities, community colleges, municipalities, counties, the Legislature, highway patrol, and other such public entities. Role Description Retirement Education and Field Services – The Retirement Education and Field Services unit is staffed with employees specially trained to present retirement information and PERS rules and regulations to PERS’ members, retirees, and covered employers. Presentation topics may include the retirement process, legal requirements for retirees, benefit options available to retirees, and information about associated programs. The Retirement Specialist III will cover these topics as well as others that pertain to the responsibilities of covered employers. By carefully learning the retirement process and the internal workings of PERS as well as using strong communication skills (public speaking, small group, interpersonal), the Retirement Specialist III is vital to many PERS members’ successful entry into retirement.

Responsibilities

Provide educational services to PERS members, retirees, and employers through presentations and interactions.

Travel across the state of Mississippi, occasionally overnight, according to training schedules and customer needs.

Audit retirement accounts to verify service credit totals, perform account maintenance to correct improperly reported wages and service credit, and prepare accurate Audited Estimates of Benefits.

Master knowledge of PERS retirement benefits and options, and the laws and regulations affecting benefits.

Demonstrate superior presentation skills: strong, confident voice; friendly demeanor; ability to work with visual aids; and manage questions and answers (Q&A) from an audience.

Possess superior skills using standard reporting and presentation software such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint and the ability to learn PERS-specific database programs.

Coordinate, oversee, and moderate seminars that involve other presenters.

Serve as the primary back-up split for the PERS Customer Service Center; answering incoming calls as needed.

Meet reporting and educational requirements established by the department director and work positively with other PERS staff to complete tasks.

What you'll need to be Successful Candidate must have superior communication skills in person, over the phone, and in writing. Candidate should also be a team player.

Qualifications

Typically requires a Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of experience.

Agency Preferred Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university and five (5) or more years of experience in work related to the duties described. The position requires knowledge of Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and general proficiency with computer programs.
