Cal Poly Humboldt invites applicants for a full-time, academic year, tenure-track faculty position with an emphasis in
Applied Humanities . We seek a broadly trained candidate with a scholarly background in the humanities who possesses a deep commitment to community-engaged scholarship and pedagogies. DEPARTMENT
The Department of Applied Humanities is a new department in the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences that houses four majors: BA in Philosophy, Spanish, French and Francophone Studies, and Applied Humanities. The department also houses several minor programs in Spanish, Spanish Media Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Environmental Ethics, Philosophy, and Arts in Health/Narrative Medicine, with a planned minor in Spanish Healthcare Interpretation. The Applied Humanities major is an innovative program launching Fall 2026 as part of Cal Poly Humboldt’s polytechnic transformation, with emphasis areas in Technology and Human Values, Health Humanities and Social Responsibility. Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include HUM 101S Applied Humanities, HUM 205 Navigating Change, HUM 490S Applied Capstone, and other courses aligned with the candidate’s expertise. Assignments will be aligned with department and student needs. The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty are teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the university, profession, and community. Responsibilities include advising students, participating in campus and system-wide communities, maintaining office hours, collaborating with colleagues, and participating in traditional academic functions. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching load is reduced by approximately one course per semester to support research and scholarly activities for retention, tenure, and promotion. Cal Poly Humboldt emphasizes learning communities that bridge disciplines and connect students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the community, with focus on environmental and social responsibility. RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS
We seek to fill the position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary depend on qualifications and experience. The annual salary range is $74,652 - $158,688; anticipated starting salary is $80,000 - $85,000. Cal Poly Humboldt provides an excellent benefits package for faculty. An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in any humanities discipline or a related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. The successful candidate must demonstrate: Record of training or experience in the field of any humanities discipline Excellence in, or potential for, university-level teaching and a student-centered learning environment Evidence of, or potential for, conducting and publishing original research on humanities topics in peer-reviewed journals Demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches Ability to connect humanities knowledge to diverse career paths through teaching, advising, programming, or scholarship Experience in community-engaged and experiential learning pedagogies, including leadership of internships and community-based learning Interest in program development and department-level leadership with willingness to expand new academic initiatives Ability to work effectively with diverse student populations Knowledge of issues facing students from diverse backgrounds in higher education Record of involving students in community engagement, research and scholarly activity PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Vision for the Applied Humanities program within a polytechnic university oriented toward social justice Experience aligned with program pathways (Technology and Human Values, Health Humanities, Social Responsibility) Experience forging connections with community partners and cross-department collaboration Experience advising/mentoring students in interdisciplinary study and promoting culturally responsive student research Ability to teach in languages used by the department (e.g., French or Spanish) Program- or department-level leadership experience is highly desired Working in California is a condition of employment.
