Overview

Tenure-track faculty position in the Department of Applied Humanities at Cal Poly Humboldt with an emphasis in Applied Humanities. The department plans to launch a new Applied Humanities major in Fall 2026 as part of the university’s polytechnic transformation. The position is full-time, academic year, tenure-track, and is open at the rank of Assistant Professor; salary and rank are dependent on qualifications and experience. Location

Candidate responsibilities include teaching, research, scholarship, creative activity, and service to the university, profession, and community. Teaching assignments may include HUM 101S Applied Humanities, HUM 205 Navigating Change, HUM 490S Applied Capstone, and other courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. During the probationary period, teaching load may be reduced to support research and scholarly activities. The department emphasizes community-engaged scholarship and interdisciplinary approaches. Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in any humanities discipline or a related field from an accredited college or university at the time of appointment. Demonstrated ability in teaching and in conducting and publishing original research in humanities topics in peer-reviewed journals. Demonstrated commitment to multidisciplinary approaches, community-engaged and experiential learning pedagogies, and connecting humanities knowledge to diverse career paths. Strong interest in program development and leadership, collaboration with diverse student populations, and ability to work with multiple departments and community partners. Preferred qualifications:

Vision for the Applied Humanities program within a polytechnic university focused on social justice; experience aligned with program pathways (Technology and Human Values; Health Humanities; Social Responsibility); experience building partnerships with community organizations; ability to teach in one or more of the department’s languages (e.g., French, Spanish); prior program- or department-level leadership experience. Assistant Professor rank with a salary range of approximately $74,652 to $158,688; anticipated starting salary typically around $80,000–$85,000. Excellent benefits package. Further information is available from the university’s benefits resources. Department and Program Context

The Department of Applied Humanities is a newly established unit housing majors in Philosophy, Spanish, French and Francophone Studies, and Applied Humanities, with several minors including in Spanish, Spanish Media Studies, French and Francophone Studies, Environmental Ethics, Philosophy minors, and a planned Spanish Healthcare Interpretation minor. The Applied Humanities major is designed to integrate core humanities competencies with contemporary workforce needs and student engagement. Application Materials
