Postdoctoral Associate – University of Miami CIMAS The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applications for a Postdoctoral Associate position in Physical Oceanography. The incumbent will work with scientists in the Physical Oceanography Division of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and with CIMAS scientists. The research will involve collaboration with scientists at Boston University and Texas A&M University.

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with a strong background in the numerical modeling of large-scale ocean and atmosphere circulations to join an energetic, multi-institution research team investigating the initiation and evolution of El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events. In particular, the postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for designing, conducting, and analyzing controlled numerical model experiments to test a number of research hypotheses focused on the efficacy of extratropical atmospheric forcing of ENSO events. This research will improve our understanding of sources and limitations of ENSO predictability, and lead to improved predictions of developing ENSO events. The successful candidate will also have access to numerous career preparation activities including collaboration with researchers in both academic and cooperative (academic-federal) institutions, funding to attend national and international conferences, and access to professional development seminars and workshops for early-career researchers.

Responsibilities

Design, conduct, and analyze controlled numerical model experiments to test research hypotheses related to ENSO and extratropical atmospheric forcing.

Collaborate with CIMAS, NOAA/AOML, Boston University, Texas A&M University, and other partners.

Contribute to the understanding of sources and limitations of ENSO predictability and to improving ENSO forecasts.

Publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

Participate in career development activities and professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or a related field; demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed literature.

Highly desirable: experience running ocean and global coupled climate models; familiarity with GFDL's coupled model or NCAR's CESM is desirable but not required.

Knowledge of Unix, Fortran, and/or C++.

Apply online at www.miami.edu/careers. Include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter with research interests and experience, and contact information for three professional references. The selection process will begin on December 15, 2016 and the position will remain open until filled. The starting date is expected to be in March 2017, negotiable. The appointment is initially for one year, renewable for a second year depending on performance.
