Scope of Position
The Marketing and Strategic Communications Department is responsible for the overall image management and all internal and external communications and marketing activities for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and associated departments, clinics and research facilities. The Director – Executive Communications is responsible for leading, providing oversight for and executing communications strategies for the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James). Through these strategies, the Director and team must effectively convey the vision, expertise, culture, services and progress of the OSUCCC – James. Position Summary
The Director for Executive Communications leads, provides oversight for, and executes communications strategies for the CEO of the OSUCCC – James. This role requires excellent reporting, writing, and editing skills, as the Director will often be required to produce high-quality content on a quick deadline. They plan, coordinate, write, and produce national reputation and thought leadership content, including significant and complex projects such as book chapters, editorials, and high-level speeches/presentations. The Director also develops executive communications (both internal and external, such as correspondence, event briefings, backgrounders, and talking points), print materials, PowerPoint presentations, and content for digital, interactive, social, and other emerging communication technologies to advance the vision of the CEO’s office and the OSUCCC – James brand and reputation. The Director collaborates with leaders and teams across the OSUCCC – James, the Wexner Medical Center and the university to ensure alignment between the CEO’s communications strategies and broader medical center and university messages and initiatives. Superior written and visual storytelling abilities are required. This position is responsible for not only planning and creating high-quality content but also distributing it through various communication channels – traditional, interactive, social and emerging technologies – and optimizing its findability and shareability by web-based search engines and across digital channels. In addition, this position may be assigned to lead various ad hoc committees and work teams involving other OSUCCC – James and Medical Center faculty and staff, department team members, graphic designers, photographers, videographers, web developers and user-experience designers both in-house and freelance. The Director reports to the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, with a dotted reporting line to the Chief of Staff of the OSUCCC – James. Strategy Development
The Director collaborates closely with senior-level colleagues, subject matter experts, and stakeholders throughout the organization to define the executive communications strategy for the Office of the CEO. They ensure that the CEO's communications strategies are in sync with broader organizational messages and initiatives and promote the reputation of the OSUCCC – James. Content Planning and Production
Works with senior-level colleagues, subject matter experts and stakeholders throughout the organization to advise, brainstorm, plan and develop content for the Office of the CEO and the OSUCCC – James national reputation and thought leadership, including significant and complex projects such as book chapters, editorials and high-level speeches/presentations, as well as senior executive communications (both internal and external, such as correspondence, event briefings, backgrounders and talking points), mass media advertising, marketing materials, publications, strategic-priority web sites, the CEO newsletter, social media and other strategically important digital channels. Editorial Management
Manages all stages of content planning and preparation for assigned projects. Develops editorial calendar and topics. Researches, conducts interviews, analyzes information and writes content for various communication channels. Assigns content development, as appropriate, to other staff and approved freelance writers. Coordinates source and leadership review of content. Drafts, reviews, proofs, checks facts and edits content to fit Medical Center editorial style and brand guidelines, space constraints, and relevant information needs of intended audience and medium. Content Distribution Coordination
Coordinates and advises on distribution plans for content and content elements. Has senior-level administrative rights for publishing content to OSUCCC – James digital properties. Presentation Development
Drafts presentations for the CEO to present at various engagements, including but not limited to internal and external scientific meetings, board meetings, and special events. Content Work-Team Leadership
Lead ad hoc content-improvement and problem-solving work teams as needed. These teams may involve other OSUCCC – James and Medical Center faculty and staff, department team members, and external consultants, and require primary and secondary research, meeting facilitation, proposal and recommendations development and presentation, as well as execution of approved projects. Effectiveness Measurement
Assists in setting effectiveness benchmarks for the CEO's national reputation and thought leadership content and in analyzing and reporting effectiveness data on a regular basis. Offers recommendations to appropriate leaders and staff based on findings. Seeks continuous improvement in methods for measuring effectiveness. Supervision
Oversees OSUCCC – James executive communications team, ensuring appropriate distribution of work that enables the team to meet deadlines. Other
Assists in planning related to all content and communications for the Office of the CEO and OSUCCC – James as needed. Serves as liaison and consultant to faculty, staff and administration regarding the content of material to be published (internally and externally).
