What You'll Be Doing
Definition: Under general supervision, the Substation Maintainer performs journey level tests, maintains, repairs, and overhauls electrical substation equipment. About Way, Power & Signal Maintenance
Way, Power & Signal Maintenance is responsible for timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, repair and servicing of the light rail right-of-way, rail system power, tracks, signals, station facilities and related equipment. Components of the Way, Power & Signal unit include: Station & Wayside Maintenance: maintains and repairs light rail stations, terminal buildings, restrooms, park & ride lots, landscaping, fences, guardrails, and other trackside areas (including graffiti removal). Track Maintenance: maintains right-of-way, weed eradication, vegetation control, graffiti removal, and inspects, services and repairs rail, switches, ties, roadbed, and track systems. Power Maintenance: maintains trackside electrical power systems, including overhead and substations, inspections, repairs, and services. Signal Maintenance: maintains and repairs signal systems, crossing gates, fare machines, SCADA controls, and station audio/video equipment. About VTA

Inspects, adjusts, and/or repairs voltage in the line, battery systems, circuit breakers, relays, and connections. Tests, maintains and overhauls rectifiers. Repairs motors and related equipment; maintains and cleans substations. Operates welding equipment and manages tools and records; may provide lead supervision and training. Prepares written reports and documents defects and repairs; operates computer for data input and retrieval. Performs related work as required. Employment Standards
Required: valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class A license. Education/Experience: high school diploma and five (5) years of experience in electrical inspections, maintenance, and repair, preferably on high voltage substations. Completion of an apprenticeship program can count toward experience. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and irregular hours. Pre-employment drug testing for safety-sensitive positions; compliance with DOT and federal regulations; fingerprinting and background checks may be required. Knowledge of high voltage electrical systems, electrical theory, testing methods, safety procedures, welding, and applicable laws and regulations. Ability to test and repair electrical equipment; work independently; read blueprints and schematics; estimate costs; maintain records; train others; stay current with new technologies in electrified rail; and establish professional relations.
