Position Summary
The Buyer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing materials, components, and services required to support production in a machine shop environment. This role ensures cost-effective procurement while maintaining high standards for quality, timely delivery, and supplier performance. The Buyer works closely with production, engineering, and quality teams to ensure materials and supplies are available to meet customer and company requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Procurement & Sourcing
Source and purchase raw materials, tooling, hardware, and subcontracted services for machining and production.
Negotiate pricing, terms, and contracts with vendors to achieve cost savings and favorable conditions.
Identify and qualify new suppliers to strengthen the supply chain.
Inventory & Order Management
Create and manage purchase orders, ensuring accuracy in quantities, pricing, and lead times.
Monitor inventory levels to maintain proper stock while minimizing excess.
Expedite orders as necessary to meet production deadlines.
Supplier Management
Build and maintain positive relationships with suppliers and vendors.
Evaluate supplier performance based on quality, delivery, and cost.
Resolve issues with late deliveries, discrepancies, or quality concerns.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with production and scheduling teams to ensure material availability.
Partner with engineering on sourcing new components or materials for new product introductions.
Support finance by reconciling purchase orders, invoices, and vendor statements.
Cost & Process Improvement
Continuously seek opportunities for cost reductions without compromising quality or delivery.
Maintain accurate purchasing records and assist with audits or compliance requirements.
Participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to supply chain efficiency.
Work Environment
Office-based with regular interaction with shop floor and suppliers.
Standard business hours, with occasional overtime based on production needs.

Requirements Required
High school diploma or equivalent; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred.
2+ years of purchasing or procurement experience in a manufacturing environment.
Strong negotiation, communication, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word).
Experience with ERP/MRP systems for purchasing and inventory management.
Preferred
Knowledge of machining, raw materials (e.g., metals, plastics), and industrial supplies.
Prior experience in aerospace, defense, or precision manufacturing.
Understanding of ISO/AS9100 quality standards.
