Overview
The Accountant (General & Cost Accounting) is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records and providing detailed cost analysis to support operational and business decisions. This role combines traditional general accounting duties with cost accounting responsibilities, ensuring compliance with GAAP and company policies. The position works cross-functionally with Operations, Procurement, and Finance to analyze product costs, track manufacturing variances, and support margin improvement initiatives. Responsibilities
General Accounting
Prepare and post monthly journal entries, including accruals, amortizations, fixed asset depreciation, and other general ledger adjustments. Manage full-cycle accounts payable (AP) and accounts receivable (AR) functions, ensuring timely and accurate processing. Perform monthly reconciliations of key balance sheet accounts and resolve discrepancies. Support month-end and year-end close activities, including preparation of financial statements and management reports. Assist with internal and external audits by preparing schedules, reconciliations, and documentation. Monitor compliance with sales tax, payroll tax, and other regulatory filings.
Cost Accounting
Analyze manufacturing costs, including materials, labor, and overhead; prepare and review standard cost models. Maintain and update cost accounting records in the ERP system to ensure accurate product costing and margin analysis. Partner with Operations to monitor production variances, identify cost drivers, and recommend process improvements. Support development of product pricing models and margin analyses for customer quotes and proposals. Prepare periodic cost reports to track performance against budget and forecasts. Support inventory valuation, cycle counts, and physical inventory reconciliations.
Other
Participate in ERP system maintenance, reporting, and potential future implementation or optimization projects. Assist with annual budget preparation and cost forecasting. Perform ad hoc financial analysis and other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
Education: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required. Preferred CPA or CMA certification. Experience: Minimum of 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a cost accounting or manufacturing environment. ERP system experience required (e.g., SAP, NetSuite, BatchMaster, or equivalent). Experience with ERP implementation or process improvement is a plus. Skills & Knowledge
Strong knowledge of GAAP, cost accounting principles, and internal controls. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling). Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret financial data and communicate insights clearly. Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional partners in Operations, Procurement, and Sales. Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
