The UCLA Police Department is a leader in providing progressive law enforcement services to an urban campus and its surrounding community. We do this through patrol, rapid response to calls for service, investigations, education and implementation of preventative strategies. Our work, grounded in a community policing philosophy, utilizes campus partnerships as the most effective approach for insuring a safe campus. Position Summary

This promotional process is limited to current University of California police personnel. The UCLA Police Department conducting an internal promotional process for Police Lieutenant, offering an opportunity to contribute to public safety and policing at one of the nation’s #1 public universities. Serving a dynamic and diverse campus community of over 90,000 students, faculty, and staff, the Police Lieutenant will oversee one or more units such as patrol operations, administration, investigations, and community services. Examination Process

After the closing date of this job announcement, the candidate pool will be screened for minimum qualifications. The candidate pool may be further screened to a manageable number of candidates and the most qualified candidates invited to participate in the examination process, which will consist of the following: Joint Police/Community Oral Board 100% The Joint Police/Community Oral Board will be composed of a combination of executive police staff and community members. Prior to this oral board interview, candidates will be required to complete a written exercise, which may take up to one hour. This candidate work product will be evaluated by the oral board and the chief of police. Activities will consist of structured interview questions, including operational scenarios. The interview questions may include, but are not limited to, the use of the following resources: UCLA Police Department Policy Manual; Memorandum of Understanding between the University of California and the Federated University Police Officers Association; Statutory law and case law pertaining to law enforcement; Candidate's work product from this promotional process; Discussion and review of a candidate’s previous work record and performance. Qualified Candidates List and Selection

Candidates will be placed on a Qualified Candidates List (QCL) in bands according to their examination process scores. Names within a band will be placed alphabetically. The list is intended to remain active for one year from the date of posting and may be extended up to one additional year at the discretion of the chief of police. As vacant positions become available, the most qualified candidates may be invited to participate in a final selection interview with the chief of police, who may consider each candidate's work product from the examination process. Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Broad experience performing all aspects of police officer and sergeant of police functions. (Required) Strong knowledge of law, regulation and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions. (Required) Strong knowledge of modern policing issues, philosophies, practices and trends as applied within the University environment. (Required) Strong knowledge of current law enforcement management theory and administrative standards. (Required) Strong knowledge of budgeting and financial practices applicable to law enforcement in the University environment. (Preferred) Strong ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing. (Required) Strong ability to take decisive action based upon sound judgement. (Required) Strong ability to effectively orchestrate the ongoing deployment of multiple employees and a variety of resources. (Required) Strong ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology. (Required) Broad knowledge of the use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment, or tools. (Required) Strong ability to credibly represent the police department and the University in an official capacity. (Required) Strong ability to supervise and train personnel in the relevant and necessary aspects of their duties. (Required) Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

High School Diploma (Required) Bachelor's Degree (Preferred) Or POST Supervisory certificate At Hire (Required) And Successful completion of probationary period as a Sergeant At Hire (Required) And Ability to drive legally in the state of California At Hire (Required) And POST Management certificate Within one year (Required) Special Conditions for Employment

Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation. Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment. Age Requirement: Candidate(s) must be 18 years or older to be eligible to be hired. Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination. Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV Pull Notice System and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
