Consultant Neurologist The closing date is 16 October 2025

This is a substantive part-time post ideal for someone at the start of their consultant career. Half the clinical work will be general neurology, contributing to the acute service and outpatient service, and half contributing to the subspecialties of sleep and movement disorders. While advertised as 8 PAs, we would be willing to consider alternatives and are more than happy to be approached to discuss how the illustrative plan below might be adjusted to meet a candidate's preferences.

Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.
Main duties of the job This is a part time substantive post based at the Royal Victoria infirmary in Newcastle. Clinical work will be roughly 50/50 general neurology/subspecialty. Movement disorders clinics are based nearby the Campus for Aging and Vitality and sleep at the Freeman hospital. There is likely be a DGH neurology component to the job.
The appointee will be able to participate in the weekly academic meetings and will have the chance to contribute to the departmental teaching programme for the undergraduate medical students from Newcastle University and to contribute to the postgraduate training if they wish.
The appointee will undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients and in relation to the running of the Department of Neurology in co-operation with the Head of Department, Departmental Manager and Clinical Director.

Job responsibilities Clinical:
Support the specialist sleep service and movement disorders service
Outpatient clinics and MDT
Local and regional expert advice
Provide an attending acute neurology service (typically 4 weeks a year)
Contribute to on‑call out of hours and weekend service (4 weeks a year)
Contribute to Advice and Referral
Person Specification Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills
Primary Medical Qualification.
Full GMC Registration.
Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC).
MD, PhD or equivalent in relevant area
Clinical Experience
Training and experience in all aspects of Neurology.
Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion for elective outpatient general neurology.
Ability to manage independently the acute neurology service and hospital liaison service at a tertiary centre.
Ability to offer an expert clinical opinion in sleep or willingness to develop expertise once in post
Ability to take independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients referred to a tertiary centre.
Experience in movement disorders.
Experience in clinical sleep.
Management and Administration Experience
Involvement with management and project leadership within the specialty.
Evidence of involvement in authoring or reviewing clinical guidelines.
An understanding of Clinical Governance.
Proven management and administrative experience and understanding of management goals.
Evidence of leadership / project management.
Evidence of having implemented change.
Experience in developing and implementing new technologies.
Evidence of participation in formal leadership training
Teaching
Experience of supervising junior medical staff.
Experience of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Ability to teach clinical / technical / practical skills.
Attendance at courses to develop teaching skills.
Postgraduate qualification in medical education.
Research
Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology and publication of findings.
Research/critical review of literature.
Publications in the last five years.
Audit
Evidence of participation in audit.
Evidence of having changed practice as a result of audit.
Evidence of having revisited the audit to assess improvement.
