Overview
American Sign Language Interpreter: Deaf Studies (Temporary Pool) for Inside Higher Ed, at Ohlone College. Provides sign language interpreting and transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees (faculty, staff, and managers) in various settings, upholding professional ethics and RID Code of Professional Conduct.
Responsibilities
- Provide interpretation and transliteration services in American Sign Language (ASL), or other appropriate methods, to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals in educational and administrative settings.
- Facilitate communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees and hearing faculty, staff, and peers in meetings, instructional sessions, workshops, events, and related activities.
- Analyze environmental factors for effective communication (lighting, seating, visual aids, technology) and suggest accessibility improvements.
- Interpret lectures, presentations, discussions, and activities, conveying information into spoken English for Deaf faculty members.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials, vocabulary, and subject content to ensure accuracy.
- Establish and maintain positive relationships with students, staff, and stakeholders; collaborate with faculty and administrators to address individual needs and enhance accessibility.
- Stay current with advancements in interpreting practices, technology, and legislation through ongoing professional development.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and foster an inclusive and equitable environment.
- Perform related duties as assigned to support accessibility and communication needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bilingual (ASL and English).
- Certified ASL Interpreter: NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, and/or CI/CT.
- Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students and Deaf community relevant to equity-minded practices.
Desirable Qualifications

Requirements & Details
Current NIC, NAD Level V, CSC, CI, CT, and/or CI/CT certifications are required. This is a temporary position. Salary: $65.00 hourly (2-hour minimum).
