MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital Worker Type: Regular Job Summary Care Partners are responsible for meeting the basic needs of patients by providing skilled levels of bedside patient care under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Care Partners also perform clerical duties necessary to the functioning of the nursing unit. Job Responsibilities and Requirements POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of Time) Essential Functions : The following are essential job accountabilities and performance criteria. General Patient Care Carries out the patient’s plan of care as it relates to the patient’s physical needs under the direction of the Registered Nurse. Delivers care requiring broad knowledge of aseptic technique, medical terminology and equipment. Assists nurses and physicians with procedures. Maintains knowledge of and operates equipment used in patient care safely. Retrieves patient care items that are not routinely available on the unit. Retrieves, recovers or follows up on patient care needs. Completed unit clerical duties including the coordination of designated unit activities, transcription of orders, medical record maintenance and serving as a unit receptionist. Prepares rooms prior to admissions and following discharges. Completes patient’s belongings list on admission and transfer. Directs prompt and courteous attention to the needs of patients, families, and visitors. Rounds with purpose; engages in service recovery activities referring unusual problems to Nurse Manager/ Designate. Rounds after dietary trays are passed to ensure meals are appropriate or as required for patient satisfaction /care needs; takes appropriate action for late or wrong trays; feeds and sets up trays as needed. Recognizes needs and initiates appropriate action in regard to maintaining supplies and equipment; notifies appropriate department to maintain a clean safe environment. Functions as a resource person to co-workers, patients/families, medical staff, and ancillary personnel. Safety and Comfort Correctly places restraints; observes for constriction of circulation, changes to skin integrity, adequate breathing; knows when and how to change position; provides ROM and skin care, toileting, and opportunities for socialization. Operates Cardiac Monitor (on/off, alarms/stand-by, lead placement, obtaining strip). Vital Signs/Measurement Completes Point of Care Testing as approved by hospital and competency. Obtains vital signs including temperature. Measures abdominal girth, weighs patients, and measures intake and output. Mobility and Exercise Applies Pneumatic Anti-embolism stockings; ambulates, turns and positions patients. Respiratory Care Assists with incentive spirometry and cough/deep breath; sets up oxygen therapy as directed; monitors pulse oximetry; completes tracheostomy care; performs suctioning. Oral/Tracheal; Wound Care Cares for wound sites; places patient on specialty bed; performs dressing changes; monitors pin care site; ensures traction weights are in proper alignment. Bowel and Bladder Elimination Administers enemas; performs straight catheterization; catheter care. Hygiene Provides hygiene and grooming daily; mouth care; hydrating routines; perineal care; toileting. Specimen Collection Obtains midstream urine, timed urine, sterile specimens; urine specific gravity (where applicable); urine pH; sputum; blood; stool specimens; etc. Clerical Answers phone promptly, directs visitors and physicians; coordinates admissions/discharges; maintains census and daily worksheets; assists with charting and transcription; ensures proper labeling and orders. Safety/Infection Control Performs duties with standard precautions; maintains safe, clean, therapeutic environment; adheres to dress code; reports risk concerns; completes annual mandatory trainings; performs unit-specific duties. Service Delivers timely, high quality care in a courteous and respectful manner; meets physical, spiritual, psychological and emotional needs; responds to call lights promptly; communicates effectively and maintains confidentiality. Personal Accountability Accountable for own performance; participates in meetings and mandatory trainings; supports unit goals; engages in PI and quality initiatives. Age Appropriate Care / Specialized Care Provides age-appropriate care and specialized care for high-risk patients, including restraint care, pain management, and abuse assessment as applicable. Job Specifications MINIMUM EDUCATION: High School graduate or GED equivalent and at least 18 years of age. Post High School vocational/specialized training preferred. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: None WORKING CONDITIONS: Regular exposure to the risk of blood-borne diseases. Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances. Exposure to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, illness). Subject to trying and unpredictable situations; may perform emergency care; subject to irregular hours; pressure from multiple demands. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Prolonged standing/walking; lifts/transfers of patients and supplies; substantial physical effort (100+ lbs).
