Coordinator of Special Education
(COSE) [0.6 FTE O'Bryant School of Math and Science / 0.4 FTE Brighton High] who is highly qualified and knowledgeable to join our community of teachers, learners, and leaders. Reports to: Principal/Head of School and Office of Special Education (OSE) Assistant Directors Responsibilities Support the improvement of student outcomes and strengthen family engagement as partners. Collaborate with the Principal/Head of School to: Create a respectful and engaging environment for all students. Ensure students with disabilities participate in the general education environment per IEP requirements. Provide or arrange professional development for special education staff. Coordinate services for students with disabilities and students at risk. Serve as liaison and coordinate work with outside agencies providing services. Engage families in planning, problem-solving, and supporting student learning. Support culturally competent practices at all levels. Collaborate on providing FAPE, LRE, and specialized instruction for students with disabilities. Support special education teachers with research-based instructional and social-emotional practices. Assist with implementation of the Code of Conduct for students with disabilities. Maintain and improve regulatory compliance. Manage referrals, chair team meetings, develop IEPs, and secure parent signatures. Support the development of IEPs and 504 plans, and coordinate with schedules and compliance activities. Participate in dispute resolution, hearings, and mediation as needed. Handle Medicaid reimbursement activities. Perform additional duties as assigned by the principal or supervisor. Participate in organizational meetings and professional development. Core Competencies:
Using the Rubric of Specialized Instructional Support Personnel (SISP), BPS identifies key skills and abilities, including: Accountability for Student Achievement Communicating Professional Knowledge Equitable & Effective Instruction Cultural Proficiency Parent/Family Engagement Professional Reflection & Collaboration Qualifications - Required Valid MA DESE License in Special Education (Moderate or Severe Disabilities), School Social Worker/Adjustment Counselor, School Psychologist, or Speech-Language Pathology. Knowledge of DESE Regulations, IDEA, and Section 504. Experience in special education, including IEP process and collaboration. Ability to meet BPS Standards of Effective Practice. Collaborative skills with administrators, families, and outside partners. At least three years of successful urban school or human service experience. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills. Qualifications - Preferred Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field. Administrative/supervisory certification and experience. Urban special education teaching or related service experience. Experience with SEIMS. Fluency in one of BPS' official languages: Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean or Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, or Somali. Terms:
