Overview We are looking for a passionate geologist to join our Post-Wildfire Debris Flow Program. This 18‑month project focuses on leading GIS mapping, supervising two alluvial fan mappers, and planning field verification. The role is a senior‑level mapper who interprets alluvial fans and supports hazard mapping.

Responsibilities

Map alluvial fans and related geomorphic interpretation for geologic hazard maps.

Use aerial imagery, LiDAR, and other remotely sensed products in ArcGIS Pro to identify debris flow hazards.

Manage grant‑funded alluvial fan mapping projects and team data/products.

Lead project timelines, work scope, and mapping standards; review staff work for professional standards; provide coaching and mentoring to junior geologists.

Assign work, plan team schedule to maintain timeframes and help staff stay on track.

Collaborate on post‑fire debris flow questions; develop a debris flow modeling framework.

Work collaboratively within a highly collaborative team to complete project objectives.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in an earth science field AND five years professional experience assessing debris flow hazards from remote sensing and field assessments (or equivalent).

Experience collecting, compiling, managing, and digitizing geospatial and tabular data in LiDAR and aerial imagery.

Proficiency in ArcGIS.

Experience leading field investigations in rugged terrain.

Excellent verbal communication skills.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment

Washington Geologist License (LG) required per RCW 18.220.020.

80% office, 20% field in rugged terrain; may traverse uneven terrain or on water in all weather conditions.

Occasional travel with overnight stays.

Valid driver’s license; driving record from all states held during past three years.

Desired Qualifications

Master’s or PhD in an earth science field.

Project management experience.

Team leadership or supervisory experience.

Experience assessing and mapping post‑fire hazards, including debris flows.

Experience modeling physical processes; e.g., debris flows, diffusive processes, rate‑state processes, probabilistic hazards.

Experience deploying, maintaining, and servicing telemetered campaign and permanent field instruments.

Experience in Python or another programming language applied to GIS and instrumentation.
