Overview

Alluvial Fan Mapping Lead Geologist, Natural Resource Scientist 3 (NRSci3) at the State of Washington. This 18-month project position focuses on leading GIS mapping, supervising two alluvial fan mappers, and planning field verification efforts within the Washington Geological Survey. Location: Natural Resources Building, Olympia, WA. Work hours and partial telework flexibility may be available. Salary: $6,107.00 - $8,210.00 monthly. Duties and Responsibilities

Serve as a senior-level mapper of alluvial fans and related geomorphic interpretations for geologic hazard maps. Use aerial imagery, lidar, and other remotely sensed products in ArcGIS Pro to identify debris flow hazards. Manage several grant-funded alluvial fan mapping projects. Lead the alluvial fan inventory projects, map fans, and manage team data and products. Manage project timelines, scope, and mapping standards; review work for professional standards; provide coaching and mentoring to junior geologists. Assign and plan work to maintain timelines and help staff stay on track. Collaborate on post-fire debris flow questions, such as rainfall intensity triggers and infrastructure risk; assist in developing a debris flow modeling framework. Contribute as part of a highly collaborative team to complete project objectives. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science in an earth science field and five years of professional geology experience assessing and identifying debris flow hazards from remote sensing and field assessments, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience collecting, compiling, managing, and digitizing geospatial and tabular data using lidar and aerial imagery. Proficiency in ArcGIS (experience and/or coursework). Experience leading field investigations in various topographic and environmental settings, including rugged terrain. Excellent verbal communication skills, especially on difficult topics. A Washington Geologist License (LG) is required per RCW 18.220.020 as outlined in the performance development plan. 80% office, 20% field in rugged terrain; may traverse uneven terrain or water in all weather conditions. Occasional travel with overnight stays. Valid driver’s license with two years driving experience; finalists may need to provide driving record from states of licensure in the past three years. Driving is an essential function. Desired Qualifications

Master of Science or PhD in an earth science field. Project management experience and team leadership experience. Experience mapping post-fire hazards including debris flows; experience modeling physical processes on earth’s surface (e.g., debris flows, rate-state, probabilistic hazards). Experience deploying and maintaining telemetered field instruments. Programming experience (e.g., Python) with GIS/instrumentation applications. Application and Equal Opportunity
