The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Olympic Region as a Straits District Engineer. As the Straits District Engineer, you will lead the planning, design, and construction of forest roads to support timber sales, public works, and road maintenance projects on hundreds of miles of forest roads. You’ll supervise staff, coordinate with engineers and foresters, ensure environmental compliance, and manage permits, rock sources, and road infrastructure. This role plays a key part in the sustainable forest management of our State Trust Lands.
Responsibilities:
Coordinates and communicates with Region Roads Engineers and District timber sale staff to provide engineering support and expertise in timber sale unit design, road layout, and compliance.
Conceives, designs, stakes, and administers the construction of select public works projects.
Supervise, assign work, and mentor subordinates in timber sale roads planning, preparation, documentation, and contract administration.
Work with District Unit Foresters to train entry‑level foresters in proper road location, rock and culvert quantities, and timber sale road compliance.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Forest or Civil Engineering AND three years of professional experience OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Experience in stream crossing structure design.
Experience in road design, construction, and maintenance, including analysis of logging operations.
Experience in contract preparation and administration.
Experience in surveying and surveying principles.
Experience designing fish passage structures and bridges.
Written and verbal communication skills.
Facilitation and negotiation skills.

Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention and requests are followed.

Special Requirements and Conditions of Employment:
Completion of the WSDOT bridge condition inspection course within 24 months of hiring.
Occasional travel outside of the Region for meetings or consultations. The employee is eligible for per diem and lodging costs when in travel status, except when provided.
The assigned duty station for this position is the Port Angeles work center in Port Angeles, Washington. The duties of this position require both office and outdoor work. Fieldwork requires working alone and with others in all types of weather, often in remote locations, driving on active logging roads, traversing off‑road terrain, and working in and around construction sites.
A valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience. Additionally, DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices). This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desired Qualifications:
Certificate of Completion from WSDOT Bridge Condition Inspection Training.
Project Management skills.
Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, RoadEng, and other engineering software programs.
Experience in forest road construction, repair, and stabilization design.
Experience in forest road structure inspection.
