Construction Materials Tester – (EPST II), Denver
Colorado Department of Revenue – Denver, CO.
This role processes samples for testing, performs assigned laboratory tests, and accurately records and reports results on aggregate and soil materials. All results meet contract specifications and compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- Materials Testing: Process material samples and perform tests on construction materials in accordance with ASTM, AASHTO, and Colorado procedures; determine required tests based on sample; verify correct standards.
- Reporting Test Results: Input lab test data into spreadsheets and ATSER for Materials; assign test numbers and generate worksheets; prepare and submit test reports for supervisor review.
- Equipment Maintenance: Maintain equipment per manufacturer and CDOT, AMRL & CCRL criteria; document maintenance schedules and repairs per AASHTO R‑18.
- Sample Management: Receive, review, and log delivered samples for proper tracking.
- Training & Set‑up: Assist in training technicians, assistants, and region testers; demonstrate proper test methods.
- CCRL/AASHTO Accreditation: Assist accreditation in the Soils Lab; test, document, calibrate, and check equipment per AASHTO R‑18.
- Training & Instruction: Train and instruct regional materials and project personnel in testing of concrete and physical properties; participate in training courses and certifications as instructor/proctor.
- Other Duties: Assist lab personnel with retrieving material from the field; operate forklift to load/unload equipment, test samples, and supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Five (5) years of experience in materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.
- Substitution: Completion of engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management, or related coursework may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis (transcripts / NACES report required).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as an EPST II with proven ability to perform duties listed above.
- Years of state service experience related to position duties.
- Knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, CDOT Field Materials Manual and testing procedures.
- Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
- Strong oral and written communication; attention to technical detail.
- Strong time management and mathematical skills.
- Certifications in WAQTC, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I & II, and CDOT radiological safety and nuclear gauge operation.
