About the Position

This position is responsible for processing samples for testing, performing assigned laboratory tests, and accurately recording and reporting results on aggregate and soil materials. The role ensures that all results meet contract specifications and compliance standards.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Materials Testing

  • Processes material samples and performs tests on construction materials in accordance with the applicable ASTM, AASHTO and Colorado Procedures.
  • Determines the required testing needs based on the sample submitted, as well as the ability to identify if all necessary tests can be performed based on the sample size submitted.
  • Verifies that the correct testing standard is being applied and evaluated by looking up project special provisions.

Reporting Test Results

  • Inputs lab test data into unit spreadsheets and ATSER for Materials, assigns lab test numbers, and generates worksheets.
  • Records and prepares test reports for supervisor’s review. Provides explanations and answers questions for test data.

Equipment Maintenance

  • Provides regular maintenance of equipment, in accordance with manufacturers maintenance schedule, as well as CDOT, AMRL & CCRL criteria.
  • Documents all maintenance schedules and any necessary repairs performed, in accordance with AASHTO R-18.

Receive and Login Samples

  • Receives and reviews information on delivered samples to ensure proper tracking of samples.

Training & Set-up

  • Assists in training technicians, assistants, and region testers. Demonstrates proper test methods.

CCRL/AASHTO re:source Accreditation

  • Assist in the CCRL/AASHTO re:source accreditation in the Soils Lab. Duties include testing, documenting, calibrating, checking equipment or other duties as assigned, in accordance with AASHTO R-18.

Training and Instruction

  • Train and instruct Region materials and project personnel in the testing of concrete and physical properties.
  • Participate in training courses and certifications as an instructor and/or proctor.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Assist lab personnel with retrieving material from the field and picking up lab supplies.
  • Operate forklift to load and unload equipment, test samples and supplies. Position will also operate the forklift to move and place heavy items and equipment within the various laboratories in the building.

Work Environment

  • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or wind conditions caused by the weather.
  • Exerts up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force regularly to move objects.
  • Exposure to non-weather related hot and cold temperatures.
  • Contact with water and other liquids or exposure to non-weather related humid conditions.
  • Exposure to fumes, noxious odors, mists, gasses, dusts and poor ventilation that may affect the respiratory system, eyes or the skin.
  • Proximity to moving mechanical parts.
  • Exposure to radiant energy.
  • Exposure to shaking objects or surfaces.
  • Performs high heat testing.
  • Exposure to high pressure conditions, toxic vapors or caustic chemicals.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
  • Five (5) years of experience in any combination of the following: assisting in the design of construction plans or monitoring construction projects by conducting materials testing, project inspection, and documentation.

Substitution

  • Completion of engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management or other relevant coursework may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. (Transcripts / NACES report required.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of ASTM, AASHTO, and the CDOT Field Materials Manual and CDOT testing procedures.
  • Knowledge of AMRL/CCRL proficiency samples testing or certifications.
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations, and to learn from others.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment.
  • Strong mathematical skills (e.g. algebra, geometry, trigonometry).
  • Strong time management skills.
  • Demonstrate flexibility.
  • Passion for safety.
  • Excellent reasoning, analytical, and problem solving ability.
  • Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical data.
  • Excellent MS Office Suite (Word, Excel), Gmail, SAP and the ability to quickly learn new software.
  • Certifications in WAQTC, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I and II, and CDOT's School of Radiological Safety and Nuclear Gauge Operation.
