The Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and Emergency Medicine are seeking a
full-time psychiatrist with a focus on Emergency Psychiatry.
The qualified candidate will provide patient care; teach fellows, residents, and students; and engage in scholarly and community-based activities—promoting all missions of the Medical College of Wisconsin. Mirroring the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin (F&MCW) Health Network, the Departments of Psychiatry & Behavioral Medicine, and Emergency Medicine, are experiencing unprecedented growth in practice locales and faculty member numbers.

Hold a primary appointment in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and a secondary appointment in the Department of Emergency Medicine, and report to the leadership of both departments
Evaluate, treat, stabilize, and aid in the disposition of patients presenting to the ED with acute psychiatric complaints
Closely collaborate with Emergency Medicine (EM) faculty members, EM residents, ED social workers, and ED nurses to identify and meet the needs of patients presenting the ED with behavioral health needs
Work collaboratively with community partners to facilitate ED-to-inpatient and ED-to-ambulatory clinic transitions of care for patients with behavioral health needs
Ample teaching and supervision opportunities with accredited 3-year Emergency Medicine and 4-year Psychiatry residency programs, an ACGME-accredited Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry fellowship program, and the 3rd-largest private allopathic medical school in the nation— the Medical College of Wisconsin— located on campus
Coverage / Schedule
ED-based staffing model of flexible 8-hr shifts (a mix of 1stand 2ndshift hours), including limited weekend and holiday coverage with no additional call responsibilities
Full-time status requires an average of 130 clinical hours per month (16-17 shifts/month)
In-person coverage is confined to a single-location work site at the flagship academic medical center, no travel requirements
The team does provide virtual psychiatric assessments to the system’s satellite ED sites as well
The summary of duties and responsibilities may evolve as the successful recruit identifies additional areas of need and focus. As with all MCW faculty members, the successful recruit will be expected to devote a portion of his/her effort to teaching, scholarship/research, community engagement, and service.
Duties and Responsibilities
Proactively provide care—including risk assessment—in collaboration with EM physicians, EM residents, ED social workers, and ED advanced practice providers (APPs) to patients in the F&MCW FH ED with primary and/or contributory psychiatric complaints.
Provide evidenced-based pharmacotherapy treatment recommendationsfor acute psychiatric symptoms.
Join ongoing efforts to support clinical workflows focused on initiating medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorders in the Emergency Department.
Devise and implement strategies and tactics to improve the disposition process for psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.
Conduct regular clinical and teaching roundson psychiatric patients in the Emergency Department.
Provide care to other patients in need psychiatric care in off-site F&MCW Health Network Emergency Departments via telemedicine technology.
Teach—both didactically and at the bedside—Psychiatry and Emergency Medicine residents and students Emergency Psychiatry-specific topics.
Initiate, conduct, and participate in Emergency Psychiatry-related scholarship and research.
Collaborate with departmental leaders to set the vision and goals for and evaluation of a Division of Emergency Psychiatry.
Perform other duties as identified by the Chairs of the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and Emergency Medicine.
