Job Overview Collins Aerospace Mission Systems Strategic Communications Solutions (SCS) engineering team seeks a highly motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to analyze, design and document structural components of military airborne equipment such as racks and secondary structures. The role involves providing structural analysis, design inputs and documentation to support downstream airworthiness certification.
Salary range: $82,000 – $164,000 USD.
What You Will Do
Communicate technical topics clearly to technical and non‑technical audiences.
Provide constructive feedback during peer reviews and mentor team members.
Work proactively with an integrated product team to identify risks, opportunities and ensure robust design choices.
Coordinate with design teams on environmental requirements such as shock, vibration and crash loading per MIL‑STD‑810 for fixed‑wing aircraft.
Document analysis results for internal and external customers to support airworthiness certification.
Lead investigations into complex, open‑ended tasks and root‑cause analysis.
Contribute to the design of custom machined/sheet metal parts and selection of commercial off‑the‑shelf items.
Participate in testing activities to verify product requirements compliance.
Qualifications You Must Have
Degree in STEM; minimum 5 years relevant experience or advanced degree with minimum 3 years experience.
Initial hand calculations to inform preliminary design decisions.
Experience with finite element analysis software (ANSYS Mechanical or similar).
Experience with modal, internal stress, fatigue and safety margin analysis.
Background in commercial/ military electronics packaging, chassis design and electromechanical applications.
Experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, NX, or similar) and best practices.
Qualifications We Prefer
Active U.S. government issued Secret or Top Secret clearance.
Knowledge of specialty materials such as honeycomb panels and composites.
Experience in design and environmental mitigation for electronics packages (enclosures/racks) with SWaP requirements.
Interpretation of GD&T per ASME Y14.5.
Knowledge of MIL‑STD‑810, RTCA DO‑160, MIL‑STD‑1472 and industry standards (EIA‑310, ATR, VITA).
Hands‑on experience designing for rugged environments.
Experience with Jira‑driven hardware development methods.
