Principal Marine Structural Engineer
Geosyntec Consultants is seeking a Principal Marine Structural Engineer to assist in growing our Waterfront Improvement practice. This role may be based in Seattle, WA; Sacramento, CA; Santa Barbara, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Diego, CA; Portland, OR or any other U.S. based office. A hybrid schedule or remote work from home may be available at the discretion of the Company.
We invite candidates with 10+ years of experience developing complex coastal engineering solutions to apply. The ideal candidate will assimilate into our Coastal Engineering and Waterfront Development teams nationwide to provide engineering and client support on complex projects.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Provide subject matter expertise (SME) for structural design and engineering of marine infrastructure projects such as bulkheads, wharfs, bridge pilings, harbors, docks, breakwaters, and shoreline protection systems.
Conduct structural analysis, modeling, and design of marine and waterfront structures to ensure stability, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards.
Support project teams with technical input during all project phases, including planning, design, construction, and maintenance.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative and sustainable solutions tailored to client needs.
Assist in preparing technical proposals, cost estimates, and project schedules to support business development efforts.
Lead and review structural calculations, technical drawings, and specifications to maintain quality standards.
Mentor and train junior engineers, fostering technical growth and professional development.
Stay updated on advancements in marine engineering practices, tools, and technologies, integrating best practices into project work.
Engage with clients and stakeholders to present design concepts, technical reports, and project updates.
Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
Overnight travel: 30 % – 50 %
Education and Licensure
Bachelor’s degree in civil, structural, marine engineering, or related field. (required)
Advanced degree. (preferred)
Professional Engineer license. (required)
Structural Engineering (SE) license. (preferred)
Skills, Experience And Qualifications
At least 10 years (15+ years preferred) of direct engineering experience in marine structural engineering, with emphasis in projects such as bulkheads, docks, harbors, and shoreline protection systems or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
Proficiency in structural analysis and design software, such as SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, or LARSA. (required)
Strong understanding of materials used in marine environments, including steel, concrete, timber, and composites. (required)
Experience in wave, current, and load modeling as applied to marine structures. (required)
Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and collaborate with cross‑functional teams. (required)
Business development acumen, with experience supporting proposal writing, client presentations, and project bids. (preferred)
Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
Current OSHA 40‑hr HAZWOPER training and refreshers. (preferred)
Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client‑driven drug and background testing may be required.
Valid U.S. driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record for business travel. (required)
Candidates must currently hold and maintain valid U.S. work authorization. New H‑1B visa lottery and employment‑based green card sponsorship are not available for this position.
Compensation Range
Minimum Salary: $140,195 / year; Maximum Salary: $248,470 / year (Seattle, WA, Sacramento, CA, Santa Barbara, CA, San Diego, CA)
Minimum Salary: $146,565 / year; Maximum Salary: $259,765 / year (Los Angeles, CA)
Minimum Salary: $133,820 / year; Maximum Salary: $237,175 / year (Portland, OR)
