Catheter Engineer
We are seeking a Catheter Engineer to support research and development of next‑generation catheter systems at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in Bethesda, MD. This is a full‑time, non‑travel role located in the NHLBI office.
Responsibilities
Design, prototype, and validate catheter components, guidewires, and accessory electronics using advanced materials and manufacturing methods.
Integrate electronic subsystems—thermocouples, RF electrodes, phased‑array coils, strain gauges, and microconnectors—into medical devices and develop wiring harnesses and custom interface assemblies.
Lead fabrication of prototypes using laser cutters, braid machines, reflow systems, coil winders, and document builds in compliance with ISO 13485.
Develop and execute validation protocols aligned with ISO 10555, IEC 60601‑1, ASTM, and prepare regulatory submission reports.
Maintain design history files, FMEAs, hazard analyses, biocompatibility matrices, and contribute to continuous improvement of tooling, design processes, and SOPs.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical, Mechanical, Materials, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
Four or more years of research or laboratory experience in a related setting.
Hands‑on expertise in catheter development—tipping, bonding, steering assemblies, sensor integration, leak/pressure testing.
Experience with ISO 10555, IEC 60601‑1, or comparable standards.
Proficiency with CAD (SolidWorks or equivalent).
Familiarity with mechanical and electrical test equipment, flow loops, and simulated‑use rigs.
Must obtain and maintain a federal or DoD “Public Trust” before onboarding.
Preferred Experience
Interventional cardiology or EP ablation catheter design; pull‑wire mechanisms or tip temperature control.
Deep material science knowledge and prior involvement in 510(k), PMA, or EU MDR submissions.
Clean‑room assembly or micro‑fabrication background.
Salary Annual salary range: $98 000 – $163 000.
