TRAFFIC SIGNAL OPERATIONS ENGINEER (Assistant Traffic Engineer II) – Range 16E / AMEA Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

DEPARTMENT : Traffic Engineering

LOCATION : 4700 Elmore Road

HOURS OF WORK : Monday to Friday 08:00 – 17:00 (Flexible)

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the current municipal union agreement. It supports the daily operations of Anchorage’s traffic signal system and is responsible for developing and refining traffic signal timing strategies, preparing timing plan revisions, responding to public inquiries, and collaborating with other agencies to resolve signal concerns. Additional duties include preparing engineering designs, sketches, and work orders for traffic signal modifications and performing other assigned duties.

QUALIFICATIONS

Engineer In Training Certificate or professional engineering regulation and five (5) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related field, one (1) year of which must be at the Assistant Traffic Engineer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage (or equivalent elsewhere).

Bachelor’s degree in Traffic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Land Use, or a related discipline, four (4) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related field, one (1) year of which must be at the Assistant Traffic Engineer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage (or equivalent elsewhere).

Master’s degree in a related discipline, two (2) years of experience in traffic engineering or a related field, one (1) year of which must be at the Assistant Traffic Engineer I level with the Municipality of Anchorage (or equivalent elsewhere).

Must possess and/or obtain satisfactory background check (including criminal, education, and employment history) at time of hire.

Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License with satisfactory driving record at time of hire.

OPTIONAL PREFERENCES

State of Alaska License as a Professional Engineer.

International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician Level 1 Certification.

Prior Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employee status.

Remote work schedule opportunities may be considered after successful completion of probation, at the discretion of the department head. Not all positions are eligible for remote work per municipal policy.
