Project Overview

We are making history at the Hanford Vit Plant, known as the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant. This unique facility will turn radioactive and chemical waste from World War II and Cold War plutonium production into a form safe for disposal, protecting the Columbia River and surrounding communities.

Job Summary

You will work as part of the Mechanical Handling team designing material handling equipment, treatment and vitrification systems and supporting utilities. You will assist the Mechanical Engineering Group Supervisor in managing work process execution and ensuring technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract and industry codes and standards. You will lead design, development, modification and issue resolution of mechanical components and processes.

Major Responsibilities

Lead a small group of engineers and technologists in executing project schedule activities.

Plan and conduct independent mechanical work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application and adaptation of mechanical engineering techniques, procedures and criteria on a medium sized project or assignment.

Lead the design, development, modification and evaluation of mechanical components and processes utilizing relevant Engineering Department Procedures, design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs.

Communicate complex technical issues and recommend solutions to upper management.

Proficient in reviewing engineering documents, specifications, design standards and ensuring technical compliance.

Coordinate and interface as directed.

Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule and support PEM/PE/EGS in creating schedules that align with project/program.

Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day‑to‑day work activities.

Mentor mechanical engineering personnel by providing on‑the‑job training for professional development.

Develop and revise Mechanical Handling design and procurement documents.

Support the procurement of equipment by developing procurement packages, reviewing quotations and evaluating them technically, reviewing vendor submittals and resolving technical issues during procurement of mechanical equipment.

Education and Experience Requirements Requires a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or international equivalent) and 5‑8 years of relevant professional experience or 9‑12 years of relevant professional work experience.

Required Knowledge and Skills

Authorized to work and remain in the United States without visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Complete and pass a pre‑employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check which includes verification of employment and education.

Obtain a Department of Energy badge for access to the Hanford Site (even if teleworking).

Experience in front‑end mechanical design and equipment selection for nuclear waste processing, nuclear or chemical facilities including cranes and other material handling equipment.

Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including SolidWorks and MicroStation.

Knowledge and ability to utilize Microsoft Office suite of products.

Familiar with regulations and industry codes and standards affecting complex engineering work within discipline.
