Chief Information Officer
Forsyth County has an opening for Chief Information Officer in the Department of Management Information Services. This position provides executive leadership in planning and directing the activities of the Management Information Services Department. The Chief Information Officer is responsible for the planning, administration and direction of a major support department. Considerable independent judgment and initiative is required. Tact and courtesy are required in frequent contact with all the various industry representatives and user departments.
A successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities: Thorough knowledge of the operating principles and practices of various computer systems and office automation. Thorough knowledge of the theory and principles of general management. Thorough knowledge of County policies and procedures affecting operations and personnel. Ability to define objectives, assign priorities and bring projects to completion. Ability to plan, supervise and evaluate the work of others. Ability to prepare and administer a budget. Ability to communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written form. Ability to communicate effectively with government officials, the public and other employees.
Graduation from a four year college with a degree in computer science, business administration or related field, and at least six years of progressively responsible computer systems experience, three of which are at the supervisory level are required. A Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field is preferred. A valid driver's license is required. There is a residency requirement for Forsyth County Department Heads. The selected candidate must become a resident of Forsyth County no more than 180 days after the first day of employment as Chief Information Officer. This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check.
Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Supervise and develop IT staff, fostering a culture of accountability, service, and continuous improvement.
Oversee the management of enterprise systems, networks, applications, and data infrastructure.
Collaborate with County leadership, departments, and external partners to align IT priorities with county goals.
Ensure the security, integrity, and confidentiality of County data and systems through robust cybersecurity policies, risk management, and disaster response and recovery protocols.
Direct the development and implementation of IT policies, standards, and procedures to support efficient service delivery.
Lead technology innovation, modernization, and digital transformation initiatives that improve organizational effectiveness and public service.
Manage IT budgets, contracts, and vendor relationships to ensure cost-effective and reliable technology solutions.
Reviews major new system work for adequacy of concept and design.
Reviews specifications for equipment and supplies.
Serves as technical advisor on information services to the County Manager and Department Heads.
Provides periodic reports to the County Manager as well as the Board of County Commissioners as necessary.
Attends conferences to learn of improvements in information services.
Performs related work as needed.
